Blogs & Blooms Summer

Flowers from Seed

GET SO MUCH  colour for so little money! The photo above is my front flower pot this week. According to my journal I started these flowers from seed in my greenhouse on March 5th, 2019.

Names are:  Prairie Sun Rudbeckia (William Dam seed), Chantilly Summer Flame Snapdragon (Renee's Seed), Rose De Shanghei Light Blue Aster  (Floret Farm).

What flowers did you grow from seed this year?

Vegetables from Seed

GROW SO MUCH flavour for so little money! These Leeks were growing in my front yard! According to my  journal I seeded these Tadorna Leeks (from Johnny's Select Seed) on February 5th, 2019 and they were already sprouting by February 8th.

They grew so fast this summer because they are in a hot concrete-brick bed and the reflected heat means speedy growth.

What new vegetables did you grow from seed?

I was also super successful with yellow onions  from seed for the first time ever in the same really hot bed. Seed for my  Newburg Yellow Onions (shown below) were bought at Seedy Saturday  from Sweet Rock Farm and  seeded the same day as my leeks.

Mark & Ben Cullen's Big Win

I was just at  #GardenComm2019  in Utah. And guess what? My friends the Cullen's won big with their video!

Yes I was a runner up and received the silver award for my video but Sheesh - imagine gold?

Maybe next year. HaHa. Congratulations again to Mark & Ben Cullen for their big win. And if you follow such things make sure to check out the award winning Blog by Niki Jabbour, Jessica Walliser and Tara Nolan. You can take a peak at the Blog HERE

Winter Program Planning!

My daughter Chelsie and I are in the planning stages for programs in 2020 and we are chatting about doing a weekend training for Vegetable gardeners again in Calgary.

We haven't done this since 2018 so if you missed it or want to come for a refresher let us know and we'll add you to our sign-up list!

We like to do intensives - a full weekend of garden fun and activity. I may also add a hands-on workshop in my greenhouse in Qualicum Beach so let us know what works best for you.

GARDENERS GROW!

Thanks for reading AND SHARING this newsletter  with your gardening friends directly via email and your social media. You are helping me help gardeners grow and beginners blossom! And remember to check in with my blog as I post new articles.

I am spending the fall looking at fertilizers. What do you really need and how will it help?
