For 35 years, the City of Portland has honored those who contribute to the growth and wellbeing of our city with the Spirit of Portland award ceremony. This year's 11 recipients have been chosen by a selection committee composed of representatives from the Mayor’s and City Commissioners’ offices, the Office of Community & Civic Life, and community members. Please join us on October 15 to celebrate the individual and organizational leadership exemplified by our community!

Access Tip of the Month

Every month, our Disability Program Coordinator, Joanne Johnson, shares an access tip to help us achieve fair spaces, accessibility, and best practices. In Joanne's August tip, she discusses what to consider when seeking and sharing information about disability experience, accessibility, and culture.

"Within and outside of disability spaces, people share disability-focused information to teach, learn, and build community. With the internet at our disposal, we have quick access to endless information... [For August] we take a deeper look at some of our assumptions around credibility and offer some questions to consider when you come across the latest disability news."

Your Voices, Better Choices

Serving on a City of Portland advisory body is one way you can volunteer and get involved with your city government. You sit side-by-side with your peers, bureau directors, and government leaders to learn a subject in-depth and provide recommendations for equitable polices and services. If you are from an underrepresented community, we will invest in your training and development to join one of over one-hundred advisory bodies.

There are currently four open opportunities:

Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission: Help develop an equity framework for affordable fiber connectivity to schools and public places like libraries.
Community Opportunity Enhancements Program: Build more pathways and contracting opportunities for minority-owned, women-owned, and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned businesses.
Noise Review Board: Make decisions on noise permits and enhance livability.
Bureau of Emergency Management User Board: Help to ensure safe and reliable responses from emergency services.

Code Change & Census Update

Code Change & Census Forum

East Portland neighbors and friends are invited to join the Office of Community & Civic Life to discuss the 2020 Census and Code Change work. Learn about the importance of the Census, how your community can participate in this civic engagement action, and what resources and guidance are available. The meeting will also include conversations about the recommended changes to City Code Chapter 3.96 and the positive impact it would have for all Portlanders.

Community Capacity Grant

Are you looking to increase capacity for public participation but need more resources? The purpose of the Community Capacity Grant is to create mutually beneficial partnerships that will support high quality, culturally relevant work with community partners in Oregon and SW Washington. The grant is available to members of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) and those partnering with IAP2 Cascade Chapter members.

Applications open: September 9 - November 15, 2019
Amount Available: $3,000 (up to $1,000 per project)
