LA IGLESIA DE MOJONERAS |
|
LIBRITOS DE PEACEANMALS PARA COLOREAR |
MOJONERAS is a humble colonia 30-minutes northeast of central Puerto Vallarta. The main cement square is surrounded by a few trees and is usually empty for lack of grass and shade. The unwalled Catholic church consists of a cement floor with several rows of wooden chairs for seating under yellow plastic streamers hanging from the amalgamated tin roof.

ESPERANDO - MOJONERAS - WAITING
|
The Mojoneras clinic always takes place in the local government building, a block away from the plaza. An elementary school is around the corner, which gave us the opportunity to give away our educational coloring books to the yellow and navy-uniformed grade school students. One of the teachers said she would make class presentations regarding care of pets and wildlife. It was another hot day - 93 degrees and high humidity.

DÍA DEL CHARRO - EL MALECÓN |
DÍA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA (Independence Day) celebrates "El Grito de Dolores." The call to arms for revolution from Spain was made early on the morning of September 16th, 1810 by Roman Catholic priest, Miguel Hidalgo, in the city of Dolores, Guanajuato. The "Grito" was accompanied by the ringing of Hidalgo´s church bell. Independence from Spain in 1821. Every year on the eve of Independence Day, Hidalgo´s bell is rung by the President of Mexico at the National Palace in Mexico City.

CALLE JUAREZ, PUERTO VALLARTA |
Puerto Vallarta has decorated itself in red, white and green lights, tinsels and golden bells. The bells are representative of Miguel Hidalgo´s church bell, and also work very well for Christmas decorations, as do the red, white and green lights and tinsels. All will stay up until late January.
Part of the Independence Day festivities is " Día del Charro" ("Cowboy Day"), Approximately five hundred "charro" and "escaramuza" ("cowgirl") riders, interspersed with musicians playing horns and drums,
began their parade down the malecón. In the procession: sweat-soaked shirted men wearing typical charro costumes expertly twirling lassos; prancing horses with long manes and tails - some performing complicated dance steps; sidesaddle-riding, smiling girls and women wearing red lipstick and colorful, ruffled skirts and blouses; and a young boy in full charro costume who couldn´t manage his horse and looked like he was going to cry, but didn´t. The drums and horns beat loudly and the smells of horse manure and beer mingling with the salty air were quite pleasant. ¡Viva México!
Thirty minutes later, cowboys, cowgirls and musicians were at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe to be blessed.
More celebrating took place on Sunday, but I chose to be at a quiet place on Banderas Bay exploring for dolphins (we only saw two) and snorkeling at a favorite cove. The watar is very clear, deep, deep blue and 88-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Karla, owner of Boca Divers, says it´s the warmest the water has been in the bay since she started taking temperatures many years ago.
