Podcast Gumbo

Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

I broke my podcast app. It’s no wonder since I’ve stuffed it with 25G of episodes (this is AFTER I deleted a bunch to try to fix it). Heck, my phone only has 64G of total space.

I’ve tried to figure out how to manage all the shows I listen to, all the compelling shows I learn about, and all the shows that people send me to listen to.  I don’t have a plan yet except that I may have to purge to zero and start again. A podcast KonPaul, if you will. Neverwracking to say the least. Never fear, though. If you’ve solicited me about your show, I haven’t forgotten about you.

Paul

p.s. I got this message this morning from JS. "Thank you again for including Bleeped in your newsletter a few weeks ago. I had a great conversation with the host and wrote it up for Podcast Brunch Club." Take a read if you liked that episode. Also, skip those book clubs and join a local Podcast Brunch Club.

Up In Smoke

The Skimmer’s Hook: How cool would it be to have a job where you could blow crap up?

Listen if you like: 4th of July, Sparkles, Excel

After banging my head against the library desk for 5 minutes, I’m just going to admit that I’m not sure how I write about this episode. I can’t accurately pinpoint why I loved listening to this as much as I did.

Working podcast interviews Americans about their jobs. That’s a hit or miss proposition. But this interview is about a fireworks designer and all that goes into a fireworks display. I’m not talking the kind where some football player on your favorite team takes off his fingers and ruins his career. I’m talking about an event on tv that happens over DC every July 4th.

There are just so many interesting facts including how fireworks and the military have something in common but it’s not what you think.

H/t to S/T for enlightening me to this podcast. If you trust her more than moi, listen to the episode about the creative director from Medieval Times

Podcast: Working - Working for the Holidays: How Does a Fireworks Designer Do His Job? (42 mins)

Rethinking Sushi

The Skimmer’s Hook: Eery, or uncanny stories from the homeland. Sorta.

Listen if you like: Japan, Fish, Weird Stories

Did you know that Americans and Japanese people define generations differently? Why that’s relevant here is that I am (a?) Sansei. As such, I grew up hearing lots of Japanese stories and hearing this story brought back memories from my childhood.

Because of this podcast, I now realize one of the reasons why I may be afraid of the water. If Jaws made your bathing suit change color, imagine what would happen if you saw a human-faced fish.

Podcast: Uncanny Japan - Human-Faced Fish (12 mins)

Taking the Bull By The Eye

The Skimmer’s Hook: Ever wonder what happens when a new disease is discovered? Wonder no more.

Listen if you like: Unknown Diseases, Epidemiology, The Great Outdoors

As a golfer who has questionable skills, I have found myself searching for my lost ball in the woods more than I would care to admit. I’ve seen bears and snakes. Even worse are the things you can’t see - ticks.

The good news is that to my knowledge, I have never gotten bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme Disease. Many years ago, I did have a bullseye on my knee but it turned out to be nothing.

I’m 3.5 episodes into this multipart series but I’ve learned and have been fascinated not just about Lyme Disease but also about how a newly discovered disease can wreak havoc on the medical profession but more importantly on those inflicted.

Podcast: Patient Zero - The Triangle (44 mins)

Extra Hot Sauce

Lately, I've listened to a few music-related podcasts. I’ve recommended My Favorite Album previously (which is why this is down here) but I loved how Kristina Murray gushes over Lucinda Williams’ self-titled album. I would do the same but oddly, nobody has ever asked. (41 mins)

I’m not sure I ever got an earworm from that album but Every Little Thing talks to an earworm expert on how to get rid of them. (30 mins)

How entertaining could a podcast be about two women talking about an office they worked at 15 years ago? We’ll find out when Office Ladies launches. It’s Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey talking BTS of the hit show, The Office. I don’t typically do news here and I’m trying to keep expectations down but I’m excited for October 16th to roll around. But seriously, how did they not call it “That’s What Shes Said?”

Lastly and most importantly, don't forget that September 29th is the second #ShareYourBudsSunday. Don't wait til then though to teach a friend or family member how to listen to these things we love, called umm, podcasts.
