Helping children do well at school

October 2019

This month's newsletter is all about supporting children's studies. We have tips for making sure little ones are school-ready, how to make homework a happy habit during the primary school years, and a guest post from exam coach James Davey on the top 3 study skills secondary school pupils children need to succeed. Plus, we have 20 ideas to boost children's reading for children who don't like books and a tip-off on a brilliant book to read if you are the parent of an under-achieving could-try-harder teenage boy! All this and other news from the Positive Parenting Project!

Is your preschooler school-ready?
What are the most important things parents should do to prepare children for starting school? You might be surprised to learn that the answer has nothing to do with teaching them letters or numbers! Here's a quick school readiness checklist for you to assess if your preschooler is on track and help them get off to a flying start. Read more...
How to make homework a happy habit
Battles over reading, spellings and homework can really sour a working parent's precious family time. If getting your child to do their homework has turned into a fight or a nag-fest (or you have taken over and are doing too much of it for them!), here are some tips for taking the heat out of homework and setting up a happier routine. Read more...
The 3 study skills that really matter!
Once children move up to secondary school and exams loom, good recall skills and being able to inhibit distractions become ever more important. Exam coach James Davey gives his top tips for which study skills are most important for success and how parents can help develop them.

20 ideas to boost children's reading
There's no doubt that if you want to support children's reading skills the best thing you can do is to encourage them to read. Lots and lots. But not all children love books. So, if pushing your child to read books is more painful than pulling teeth, it's time to find some new ideas to engage them in reading!

If you have a teenage son who is not doing as well as you think he should at school, this book could be a game changer for you. A boy who dashes off his homework at the last minute or is too cool, too busy or too engrossed in his Xbox to put in the hours on his academics? This book could help you figure out what's going on, stop nagging and find a route forward. Read more...

News from the Positive Parenting Project
In the last year, I have written five new parenting seminars: 'Stress-free Family Evenings', 'Communicating with Teenagers', 'Successful Step-parenting', 'Encouraging Co-operation (how to get children to do what they're asked)' and 'Preparing Teenagers for Leaving Home'. That's on top of finishing the draft of my first book (The Work/Parent Switch to be published by Vermilion Books next year), delivering support to around 3000 parents through seminars, parenting clinics and one-to-one coaching and reaching over 500,000 people via social media (if the stats are to be believed). That's quite a busy year!

Like many working parents, I have also been somewhat guilty of neglecting my own self-care and prioritising work and family needs above my own. So, this October, I am making a concerted effort to top up my resilience by sitting in the sunshine a bit more often (and for a few minutes longer) at lunchtimes, finding woodland walks where I can crunch the fallen leaves at weekends, and being more active in the causes I care about. Little actions for happiness can go a long way.

If you'd like to find out why the Positive Parenting Project is so popular and keeping me so busy, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn. Or why not book one of our new parenting seminars for your workplace?
