CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF UNLOCKING STUDENT POTENTIAL
Reading Foundations for Future Opportunities
This summer, we celebrated our second anniversary!  ALLMemphis was founded in 2017 to address inequity in access to language and literacy instruction by making the Orton-Gillingham method available to all children in Memphis. Since then, we’ve:
  • Trained 51 teachers
  • Mentored 10 literacy coaches
  • Served 1,042 students in Title 1 public charter schools
In the 2018-2019 school year, 48 percent more kindergarten students and 31 percent more first-grade students at ALLMemphis partner schools tested in the top 50 percentile on the MAP Reading Fluency assessment compared to the year prior to ALLMemphis support.

Additionally, 28 percent more second-graders at ALLMemphis partner schools met expected growth on the MAP Reading Fluency assessment than in the year prior to ALLMemphis support.

Our approach gets results!

We’re already working hard to net even greater student achievement outcomes in 2019-2020 by increasing our focus on in-school supports and stronger teacher development. With so many exciting things on the horizon, we are even more fired up about the new school year!

Toward a fully literate society,

NEW SCHOOL YEAR UNDERWAY WITH NEW PARTNERS

ALLMemphis is pleased to add Believe Memphis Academy, Memphis Merit Academy, and Power Center Academy to our family of partner schools for 2019-20. We’ll also be expanding our role at Promise Academy - Hollywood to provide RTI2 services in the third through fifth grades.

In July, we held summer training sessions with teachers, coaches, and reading interventionists from each of our partner schools. Participants were immersed in a full week of topics, strategies, and procedures that they will be able to use to make a positive impact on student reading performance in the upcoming school year.

We will use summer training feedback to refine our methods, services, and processes so that we can better serve the students and schools in our community. We look forward to working with both new and old friends this school year!

BRANCHING OUT TO RTI2

We are expanding our ALLMemphis model to include Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) services. RTI2 is a state-mandated reform designed to provide more individual, intensive academic support for students who need it the most. It is the only way to justify special education services for individual students, but its ultimate goal is to prevent students from needing special education services in the first place.

There are no funds specifically allocated for it, so schools have to work it into budgets that are already stretched thin. Many schools have struggled to effectively implement RTI2 due to the lack of funding and scheduling challenges.

ALLMemphis is excited to help schools make RTI2 more effective for students in kindergarten through sixth grade by providing the strong focus that this work deserves. ALLMemphis is enhancing programs that are already in place or replacing the in-school phonics program altogether. We believe that we can make these programs more beneficial for students and teachers and produce unprecedented student growth.

ALLMEMPHIS TEAM IN TRANSITION

We bid a fond and bittersweet farewell to Michelle Gaines as she and her family embark on a new adventure. We thank Michelle for her vision, leadership, and passion and wish her all the best.

Staffers Carl Schneider and Clifford Stockton III have stepped into new roles at ALLMemphis. Carl is our new Director of School Support, and Clifford is our Senior Program Specialist with a focus on Family Engagement.
Education Pioneers fellow Subhanshu Pandey joined the ALLMemphis team for the summer. Subhanshu hails from a small district in India called Etawah, which is about 150 miles from national capital New Delhi, and he is completing an MBA at Boston University. Over the summer, he worked with our software development company to begin work on our Read for ALL program that we are creating to make our curriculum more accessible to our partner schools…and beyond.
While we will miss him being part of our everyday team, Subhanshu will continue to work with ALLMemphis throughout the year on a contract basis.
We are pleased to welcome two new Program Specialists to our ALLMemphis team – Deidra Hawkins and Nikeesha Kelley!
Deidra’s dedication to educating youth, building relationships, and closing achievement gaps are evident in her role as a Program Specialist.

She enjoys working with students and giving them access to the educational tools needed to build upon their foundation for academic success.
Nikeesha Kelly is an accomplished teacher with nine years of experience implementing learning strategies in the classroom.  She thrives on challenging educators’ thoughts about the possibilities in the world of teaching and learning.

As a Program Specialist, she is interested in building relationships while providing a literacy-rich curriculum in order to promote educational equity in the classroom.
