Fujifilm Cellular Dynamics prepares to open ‘cleanroom’ facility

September 15, 2019
FCDI’s new $21 million facility, next to its headquarters at University Research Park, will meet the Food and Drug Administration’s strict standards for Good Manufacturing Practice. With specially filtered air, air-lock entry doors, gowns, gloves and masks worn by workers, and with other provisions, the space will be at least 1,000 times cleaner than a regular lab, company officials said.

Ahna Skop, a University of Wisconsin–Madison genetics professor, artist and advocate for underrepresented students on the UW–Madison campus and beyond, has been selected as an IF/THEN Ambassador — an initiative to further women in science — by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

UW launches new school of computer science, responding to student demand and workforce need

September 6, 2019
The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced on Thursday the creation of its first new school in two decades, responding to high demand from students and a burgeoning need in the state’s workforce.

Computer science is now the most popular undergraduate major at the university, growing to 1,560 students in 2018. Over several years, massive increases in student enrollment strained the computer science department’s resources.

Corporate investors offer another avenue for young companies

From insurance to health, and from manufacturing to agriculture, corporate venture funds have evolved from trend to fixture on the early stage investing scene.

When the venture capital arm of American Family Insurance got off the ground in the early 2010s, it was ahead of the game when it came to corporate venture capital — especially within the insurance world.

In fact, only two other insurance company funds were putting money into young firms in the “insure-tech” or financial tech arenas. Today, there are more than 30 such funds worldwide, with $2.5 billion collectively invested by insurance funds in 2018 alone.

Innovation Network Luncheon: Ebola, pandemics and avian flu

One of the world’s experts on Ebola and influenza viruses will be joined by the head of FluGen Inc. at the Sept. 24 Tech Council Innovation Network luncheon in Madison.

Internationally renowned virologist Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka, a UW-Madison and University of Tokyo scientist, will explain how flu viruses naturally mutate – often into more dangerous strains. Such was the case in the 1918 pandemic that killed about 50 million people worldwide. Kawaoka is involved in fighting the Ebola virus outbreaks in Africa and is a leading authority of the transfer of “avian” flu strains from birds to people.

Kestrel’s 8-hour DOT General Awareness Training is applicable for all biotech companies that ship hazardous materials, ship hazardous waste, or prepare shipments of hazardous materials/waste for transport. It teaches all topics required for DOT general awareness training and DOT general security training and will meet the requirements for triennial training certification. Participants will receive a Certificate of Training, course guide, and resource collection of DOT support materials.
