September 22, 2019
15th Sunday after Pentecost
Worship
7:30 &10:00 AM

Scripture Readings for this Sunday:

Amos  8: 4-7

Psalm 113

1 Timothy 2:1-7

The Bible contains many troubling verses and our gospel for this Sunday is no exception. Jesus appears to commend a dishonest manager because he acted shrewdly. Then Jesus says: “Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.”

Jesus does commend the dishonest manager but not for his dishonesty. He’s commending him for his shrewdness or for his cleverness. He then encourages us to be just as astute and to have the same resourceful zeal and creativity in pursuing the values of God’s kingdom. As followers of Jesus, we need to invest the same energy and imagination in laboring toward lasting values such as mercy, justice, peace, love of God, and love of neighbor.

Woody Allen once said that 90% of life is just showing up. This is certainly true if it means showing up to do God’s justice. This is certainly true if it means showing up to be just as outrageous in divine generosity, forgiveness, mercy, and love just as Jesus is for us.

In all that we do, we are called upon to respond with great shrewdness and cleverness in working for the values and the goals of Jesus. We are called to work creatively and with imagination as “children of the light” so that in the name of Jesus, we can be vessels of abundant light and life and justice for all people and for all of creation. Please join me and your brothers and sisters in worship this Sunday.

Within the ELCA "God's Work, Our Hands" has been observed for several years, and the intent for this day is to make God's work more visible among the community and our members. In these four simple words, God's Work, Our Hands" we summarize one of the basic foundations of the Christian faith - God comes to people through people.

At Calvary "God's Work. Our Hands." will be observed on Sunday, September 29.  On this Sunday, members and friends may participate in the giving of blood, or Calvary In the Sea (ocean clean up) and/or to volunteer at Angel Network.

We will have a shortened worship service at 7:30; then do service work from 8:00 - 10:00 am  for all members, followed by worship at 10:00 am.

The 🩸Blood drive will be happening throughout the morning from
7:00 am - noon. Please make a point of participating in one or more of these ministries to God's world. If interested in DONATING BLOOD and SAVING LIVES, please contact Roxy or Kimberlee at 377-5477 or stop by the church office to schedule an appointment. NOTES FROM TOM....

Have you ever asked yourself, “If God created all of reality, including everything we cannot see, or hear, or touch, then how can there be things that are not Gods? Isn’t everything God’s?”  Have you ever wondered if Jesus is another of God’s ways to tell us that God is love, and that with Jesus God has once and for all time claimed all of reality, and every single life, and every single thing as God’s?

God has been shouting from the roof tops that all of existence, all of life, all that we know and don’t know is holy, is sacred, is wrapped with God’s love and presence and holiness. Yet, we resist. We dare to disagree with God. Why is it so much easier for us to divide reality into that which we think belongs to God and that which does not belong to God?

So, I ask you. How do you decide what belongs to God and what does not belong to God? In light of God’s profound expression of grace-mercy-love-forgiveness how can you apply God’s claim on all of creation, except for which portions did you say? What do you get personally out of denying that everything is sacred, everything is holy, everything belongs to God? Why is it important for you to withhold from God everything God has created and blessed? In doing so what does that make you?

I dare you to begin living your lives with the understanding that all of creation is sacred, that relationships are holy, that sex, and dance, and music, and art, and food, and children, and pets, and work, and sunsets, and protests, and struggles are all gifts from God. What do you think will happen when you open your hearts, and minds, and bodies to God’s claim on you and on everything in this universe? Give it a try—live just one day as a holy person in a sacred space.

“Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee, how great thou art! How great thou art!”
