~ YOUR MARKET GUIDE: OCTOBER~
|
|
|
Autumn has officially arrived! While it’s hard to say goodbye to our berry farmers for the season, there’ll still be plenty of pectin at the market. ProFarm Orchards will not only be offering certified organic apples and pears, but also naturally sweet pure apple cider as well!
Of course, there’ll be heaps of fall harvest crops at the market this October. You’ll see squash, carrots, and leafy greens like kale and chard, all ideal ingredients for adding into a seasonal soup (check out our Seasonal Eats recipe below for inspiration).
As the weather becomes chillier this month you’ll be able to warm up at the market with Ah Nuts’ hot glazed nuts or herbal hot cocoa and teas from The Wilderness Maven.
And from The Pie Guy’s classic pumpkin pies to Sinful Confections’ vegan pumpkin spiced cupcake with “cream cheese,” expect the market to transform into pumpkin spice paradise.

Drop by the farmers market for some fuel either before or after you make your donation. Each donor will also receive 1 free meal to The Fit Foods South Waterfront location! Sign up to donate at this link or call 1-800-398-7888. Walk-ups are also welcome!
Halloween: October 31, 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Get ready to have a spook-tacular time at the market on Halloween. Come dressed to impress, as there’ll be a costume contest (and the prize is a large pumpkin pie from The Pie Guy)! There’ll also be wickedly wonderful goodies for the kids to trick-or-treat throughout the market too.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW WINTER FARMERS MARKET
|
|
|
For the first time ever, the farmers market fun won’t stop at the end of October. This season, we are introducing a Winter Farmers Market! It will be held on the second Thursday of the month from November 2019-February 2020 so that you can stock up on your favorite foods and handmade gifts in time for the holidays.
The Winter Market will still be held at Elizabeth Caruthers Park, but due to the lack of daylight during the winter months, the Winter Market will take place from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on November 14th, December 12th, January 9th, and February 13th.

SEASONAL AUTUMN EATS: ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH, CARROT, AND APPLE SOUP
|
|
|
Ingredients:
1 large butternut squash
4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
6 large carrots, ends trimmed & cut into 1-inch pieces
1 large onion, diced
2 large apples, peeled, cored, & diced
4 garlic cloves, peeled & chopped
2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled & sliced
5 + cups chicken or vegetable broth
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
Peel the squash, and cut in half. Scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard.
Cut the squash into 2-inch pieces, and toss with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
Bake the squash in the oven until fork tender, about 25 minutes. Cool to room temperature.
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until lightly smoking.
|
Instructions (continued):
Cook the onion until translucent, stirring often, about 6 to 7 minutes.
Add the apple, garlic, carrots, and ginger, and cook, stirring often for 8 minutes.
Add the broth and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat to a simmer, and cook until the apples and carrots are very tender, about 10 minutes.
Cool the onion and apple mixture to room temperature.
Using a blender, blend all of the ingredients in batches with some of the cooking stock. (If soup is too thick, add a little additional stock).
Stir the soup, taste, and adjust seasonings as needed.
