Why participants attend: "To learn more about a systems approach, be part of joined up, long term impactful approaches" ~ mental wellbeing network participant
The East Gippsland Mental Wellbeing Network

Our aim is to identify root causes that challenge mental wellbeing and explore their relationships in order to create opportunities for long term outcomes through a whole of community approach for primary prevention.

Our four workshops have been informed by the Systems Change Framework and use a complex problems approach.  We have been exploring the following complex problems related to mental wellbeing:

1) There are socially isolated children and families in East Gippsland.
2) East Gippsland are focused on reactive measures rather than early intervention and primary prevention.

In this newsletter we share our latest outcomes and next steps.
Activities and Outcomes from Workshop 4

1) We identified local examples in which the complex problems are playing out, and then explored those contexts more deeply to identify an opportunity to intervene.
2) With these new insights we scaled down the complex problem.
3) We then used these to identify new outcomes that we can work towards.
Complex Problem #1
There are socially isolated children and families in East Gippsland

Scaled Complex Problem
Children and young people do not have a voice within schools and community

Outcome we are seeking
Mechanisms that capture the voices of young people are inclusive of their diverse experiences and wellbeing needs

Actions
Co-design and create with young people a mechanism for engagement

Complex Problem #2
East Gippsland are focused on reactive measures rather than early intervention and primary prevention

Scaled Complex Problem
East Gippsland organisations are not always connected to the health and wellbeing plan because there is no clear leadership, authority, ownership

Outcome we are seeking
There is clarity of leadership and roles for the health and wellbeing plan for East Gippsland

Actions
Identify opportunities for prevention leadership from the mental wellbeing network

Where we are headed next

Following from workshop 4 we will now break into separate working groups to focus on the two outcomes as they require different approaches.

Stay tuned for more updates from EGPCP on how to be involved! Detailed outcomes are available on our Basecamp page. If you want access to Basecamp content, please get in touch.

Principles Guiding Our Work

Our overall purpose is to clearly identify what and how things need to change in order to improve mental wellbeing in East Gippsland.

We are exploring this opportunity with a focus on primary prevention and using a whole of community approach and aiming for long term outcomes.

We are motivated to come together because we are seeking better outcomes for mental wellbeing. In order to achieve that we acknowledge we must collaborate for long term meaningful change.

We are using the Systems Change Framework to guide our efforts.
