Presidents Report

Almost one week until PATROLS are on the beach.

The weather is warming, and the committee has been busy preparing for the new season.  PLEASE, PLEASE help us to help you!

It would be greatly appreciated if you could pay your membership fees and arrange proficiencies ASAP so our volunteer committee can get onto projects to improve our club.

Last weekend our water competition team was reunited with our old coach Marty Cowper at our first ever pre-season training camp. It was an unbelievably successful event. Thankyou to Blackhead SLSC and their extended team of helpers for your hospitality and organising.  We will be back next year.  You can see photos and a wrap-up of the weekend further into the newsletter.

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU?  A reminder that our club committee is dedicated to improving Mona Vale Surf Club and welcome any ideas and feedback from our members. Please feel free to contact me on president@monavaleslsc.org.au or +61 419 018 318.

URGENT, URGENT, URGENT.... Your feedback IS REQUIRED by council for the updated precinct plan. We only have a few days left to submit to council regarding the changes to the precinct plan. PLEASE follow the link and ensure you provide feedback, positive or negative, and ensure we support/oppose the changes which result in more space for us within our new building.

BAR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED.
We are getting low on our bar volunteers. It's a great way to meet people and really simple to serve behind the bar. You would only be needed two hours every 6-8 weeks. If you can please help out, please contact bar.manager@monavaleslsc.org.au

Pre-Season Training Camp (Blackhead Beach) - Mona Vale Competition Team

Last weekend (September 14 & 15) welcomed the first ever pre-season training camp for the MVSLSC competition team consisting of both junior and senior competitors.

It was a magic couple of days (weather could not have been more perfect) for the two-day camp, with Marty Cowper (ex MVSLSC head coach) putting the kids through their paces.  Approximately 40 MV competitors mixed with other competitors from Blackhead, Port Macquarie, Forster, Manning and Sawtell, then spent Saturday attending different water and beach sessions, along with goal-setting and guidance on the importance of nutrition and stretching.

Sunday morning the groups were split into four teams and competed in a mini carnival consisting of sand running, swim, board and ski. It was great to have the senior and junior competitors mixing together and the parents enjoying the time as well. It was also wonderful to have some of the men's boat crew away with the group for the weekend.

A special thankyou to everyone involved in the organisation of this weekend as without your effort and dedication these initiatives do not happen. Thanks to the coaches, water safety and special guests for giving up your time and sharing your expertise with the group.

To Marty, the Blackhead SLSC and their volunteers, MVSLSC can't thank you enough for hosting a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to next year's annual event.

Education

Proficiencies (Skills Maintenance)
Don't forget you can start your e-learning component of your proficiency at any time.  Just log onto members area of SLSA website.

For your diaries, the dates for dry component of proficiencies are as follows:
(please note one of the dates provided in last fortnight’s newsletter was incorrect)
  • 10:00am Sunday 29 September 2019
  • 7:00pm Wednesday 23 October 2019
  • 2:00pm Saturday 9 November 2019
The run-swim-run and rescues will take place during patrol hours. We have a team of 10 who will carry out these components so there will be plenty of opportunities to undertake. We will publish the dates for these in an upcoming newsletter.

Our volunteer training team spends considerable time undertaking proficiencies, so we are not planning on providing additional proficiencies this season. If you have a problem with dates nominated, please contact me and I will review.

Courses
We have two initial courses planned as follows:
  • Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC): This is our entry level course to surf lifesaving and is targeted at our younger members. This course will run along with nipper program and will commence on Sunday 13 October 2019. To be eligible candidates need to be 13 on date of final assessment and be able to complete a timed pool swim (200 metres in 5 minutes or less).
  • Bronze Medallion (BM): This course allows you to become a patrolling member of our club. This course will commence on Sunday 13 October 2019.  To be eligible candidates need to 15 on date of final assessment, be able to complete a timed pool swim (400 metres in 9 minutes or less) and agree to complete two seasons of surf patrols.
I look forward to working with members over the season with training and assessment. If you have any questions pleased not hesitate to contact me via email on chief.instructor@monavaleslsc.org.au
