Board of Education Update

Highlights from September 9th Board of Education meeting:

  • All four findings on the FY17 audit have been cleared and closed. Many changes have been made as a result of the audit findings.  See my Audit Review Facebook post
  • DCSD continues to need more Special Education teachers, so Human Capital Management (HCM) is exploring creative options, such as job sharing between SPED certified retirees.
  • Additional translation and interpretation services were approved. These services will be specifically for students covered by IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).
  • Warren Technical School’s Capital Renewal Project was approved.
  • The BOE approved a contract extension for AECOM, the program management firm for SPLOST. AECOM is a top nationwide management firm with expertise in day-to-day operations, as well as programming.
  • The Evansdale Education Foundation donation for the Evansdale media center was approved.
  • Derrick Brown was approved as the new IT Chief. He is coming from Washington with a long history of IT strategy/execution; project management; and leadership in school districts, business/nonprofit, and the federal government.
  • Several speakers at the public input session voiced concern regarding the condition of facilities, but distrust regarding the proposal for funding. See video above for my  pledge to rebuild trust by acknowledging the history of corruption in Operations/SPLOST, and sharing the ways our SPLOST/ Operations procedures have changed since then. I also clarified that the proposed SPLOST/GO Bond project list will be revised based on public feedback.
