FRIENDS OF SOUTH SURREY PARK

SEPTEMBER 2019 NEWSLETTER

Sunday Working Bee - 29th September, 10 - 12 noon
Our next Sunday working bee will probably be infill mulching in the established plantation below Delta Street.  The mulch in this area has become thinner and as we have planted some new seedlings in areas mulched previously it seems worthwhile to continue with this work. Weeding is an alternative activity.   Both give our indigenous plants a better chance to flourish.
Meet below  Delta street at 10.00 a.m wearing strong shoes and all weather gear.  Bring along your family and friends and stay for a tea or coffee at the end.
The contact person is Pam - 0418176390

This photograph was taken  about twenty years ago and shows the first plantings in the area we will be working in on Sunday week. It has changed so much since then.

Sunday  August 25th Working Bee Report
We had a smaller group to work in the park on this Sunday but they were very dynamic. Holes had been dug in places around the Union Road end of the park and seedlings planted where there were bare patches.   It looks really good and recent rains will have given the plants a good start.

Tuesday Toilers
There are plenty of weeds growing in the park after the rain so Tuesday Toilers have been very busy.   Fran does like to focus on the weeds but on Tuesday she took time out to show me how well the VINC Seed Orchard Project plants are growing.   We had a very pleasant walk around in the sunshine searching for Hardenbergia - purple flowers, Kennnedya - red flowers, and  Pimelea - white flower   The Bossiaea haven't flowered yet so it was more difficult to find them. The ones we found are pictured below together with a Goodenia - yellow flower to stand in for Bossiaea.

General News
Annual General Meeting held on 11th September, 2019
Reports were presented and carried and the committee was elected to the same positions as last year (see below).   We were then very fortunate to have Geoff Lay speaking to his photographs from his travels over a fifty year period..   He had some very interesting comments and information about the places he had been to and everyone in the room learnt more about places they had visited or hoped to visit.
We finished with a very enjoyable chat and supper.

Self guided walk
