SMMI sponsors Coastal Powerhouse category at prestigious Maritime UK Awards ceremony
The Maritime UK Awards are the first truly national maritime awards in the UK, organised by industry, for the benefit of industry. They are here to celebrate businesses and organisations making a contribution to a sector that is worth £37.4bn to the UK economy. The inaugural event took place in Southampton on 19th September, following a successful drive from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for the first awards ceremony to be held in the Solent. SMMI was delighted to sponsor the Coastal Powerhouse category which was won by Mersey Maritime with the Solent LEP and Port of Cromarty Firth being the other finalists in this category. SMMI Director, Prof Damon Teagle presented the award. Read more here.

Research expedition to assess the recovery of Scottish coral reef
A team from the University of Southampton has successfully obtained the largest continuous visual map of the seafloor ever obtained in UK waters during a currently ongoing expedition at the Darwin Mounds. The expedition led by co-chief scientists Blair Thornton of the University of Southampton and Veerle Huvenne of the National Oceanography Centre, deployed underwater robots to map cold-water-coral mounds at a depth of 1000m in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). Blair Thornton, SMMI member and Associate Professor of Marine Autonomy at the University of Southampton says, "the large area and high level of detail in the visual maps BioCam collects can help scientists recognise patterns and features on the seafloor that would otherwise go unnoticed, allowing ecologists to compare sites and document changes over time at much larger scales than previously possible." Read more here.

MD's and CEO's of major marine organisations to speak at the 2019 Annual Shipwrights Lectures

The research chosen by the students this year covers a wide range of topics, such as 'machine-learning predictions of ship performance', 'An experimental study into the dynamnic response and peak forces experienced by a floating hybrid renewable energy device in abnormal waves', 'Measuring the performance of a flexible propeller in a wind tunnel' and 'An experimental investigation into the application of flapping foils to different vessel sizes'.  Read more here.

Coastal communities highly threatened by rising sea-levels, even with climate change mitigation
An international group of scientists have urgently called on world leaders to accelerate efforts to tackle climate change. Almost every aspect of the planet’s environment and ecology is undergoing changes as a result climate change, some of which are profound if not catastrophic for the future. Rising sea-levels is one of the biggest threats.  Amongst those are low-lying atoll nations of small island developing States. SMMI member Dr Sally Brown, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton and Bournemouth University, led the research on the effects of sea-level rise on the Maldives, the world’s lowest lying nation.  Read more here.

Pioneering engineering partnership to reduce noise pollution and protect marine wildlife
A ground-breaking new partnership has been announced that will see the University of Southampton join with BAE Systems, the University of Nottingham and Lloyd’s Register to create new materials that will not make noise underwater, reducing its harmful impact on marine wildlife. The project is one of four new Prosperity Partnerships announced by UK Science Minister, Chris Skidmore. Industry partners, including BAE Systems, are jointly investing £17.5m in addition to a £12 million UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) investment delivered by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). DNA tests of UK waters could help catch invasive species early
A team of scientists from the University of Southampton, Bangor University and the National Oceanography Centre have discovered several artificially introduced species in the coastal waters of southern England, using a technique that could help the early detection of non-native species if adopted more widely. The researchers, led by Luke Holman, a PhD student at the University of Southampton, collected water and sediment from four marinas around the UK and analysed the DNA of each sample to determine which species had been present in the ecosystems.
