  • March 2nd, 2020 - Johnston Chopped!

Summer Lunch Update

Almost 5000 meals were served this summer in the Johnston Community School District! We averaged 44 meals a day at Chapel Ridge but had other sites averaging 20-30 meals as well. Thank you to our volunteers and to the Johnston Schools nutrition staff for their hard work this summer feeding our community!

Clothing Wanted

Many clients are doing their back-to-school shopping at our Clothes Closet. Summer is usually our slowest month for clothing donations, so we would love your clothing donations to get students off to a great start this school year. You can drop-off items during our regular business hours.

Thank You New Hope United Methodist Church

Visitors to the Food Pantry on Saturday, Sept 14th were treated to a free tailgate party (free hot dogs, sloppy joes, popcorn and snow cones) courtesy of the High School Youth Group from New Hope United Methodist Church. This is the third year for this event celebrating the Iowa-Iowa State football game.

Johnston Youth Mentoring Program (JUMP)

JUMP is a one-to-one mentoring program that facilitates one hour mentoring sessions between a member of the community and a Johnston student in grades 6-12 during the school day. Mentors act as positive role models who listen and help set goals while reinforcing basic skills, attitudes and other lessons in life. Mentors typically meet with their students one hour each week during the school day. Anyone who wants to get involved can fill out an application packet.

The school year is starting off well for our JUMP students. There were 36 JUMP students who attended the Summit and JMS back to school events, giving them an opportunity to explore the building while it is still relatively quiet and calm. Students receive a printed schedule and JUMP staff and student volunteers help them to find and learn how to open lockers, meet key building staff members, assess the need for supplies, etc. High school students have Dragon Day, a day-long event before the school year starts to come to the high school and walk their schedule, take school pictures, etc. JUMP staff work with these students to ensure they attend Dragon Day and provides one on one support for JUMP sophomores at Dragon Day to address any scheduling issues as well as also give them a building tour if needed.

There are 9 seniors participating in the JUMP program this year. Four of these seniors will be taking classes at DMACC during half of their school day. These students are involved in the CNA, culinary and criminal justice programs and attend classes at no cost. Upon graduation they are on track for having multiple DMACC credits towards their degree or certificate program.

For more information on how you can become a mentor in the Johnston Community School District, please contact Chris Wilson at 515.986.2007.

A special thank you to Lauren Steenhoek who is stepping away from our board. We appreciate all of your hard work and commitment to the Johnston Partnership!
