"Together we can and do make a difference in Idaho"
CCI Chair - Rose Cheff

It’s been a crazy, busy summer for all of us.  Lots of travel, training, workshops, etc. It seems the only constant in our lives is how busy we are and that we all face changes in our work and our focus on a regular basis.

During our Fall General Meeting in Idaho Falls, CCI leaders talked about changes taking place in CCI's administrative structure.  We announced that Molly Levkiv, our IT person, resigned. We noted that Debi Dockins, our Executive Director, will be stepping down as Executive Director and will continue working shortened hours on a contract basis.

Ashley Billman, our Project Director, will be moving into the Interim Executive Director role. These transitions will be in place beginning October 1.

During this time the administrative team and CCI executive board will come together to determine what personnel needs CCI has moving forward.  Our evaluator, Jim Hopla, has two interns working with him and has graciously agreed to lend us assistance, should we need it, while moving forward with administration changes and year two of CCI's action plan.  We have three candidates interested in the Social Media position and these will be reviewed, along with the current position descriptions.

Our second discussion revolved around my vision for CCI’s future.  I would like to create Outreach Teams consisting of CCI members and partners, to visit those areas in Idaho that don’t have an existing prevention coalition, or a coalition with few resources, or schools that have limited resources for prevention education.  We’d expand the existing Marijuana Toolkit and build Toolkits on subjects such as Vaping, Opioid Addiction and Underage Drinking.  The Toolkits will enable Outreach Teams to provide prevention education and resources (handouts, conversation cards, videos, etc.) to Idaho areas in need.

The Toolkits and Outreach Teams will meet the prevention education needs of so many areas of Idaho that face substance abuse issues but little to no resources to deal with them.  I am excited at the possibilities!

As we move forward, we are depending more and more on the support of our board, our general membership and our partners. Together we can do make a difference in Idaho.      Rose Cheff, CCI Chair
Goal setting to increase sustainable outcomes is nothing new, but it feels that way when presented in new and innovative ways.  That is what happened at the CCI Sustainability Conference held in Idaho Falls on September 9.  Partnering with the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (NWPTTC), attendees were inspired to make positive change and connections with prevention partners in Idaho and beyond.

Held in the Eastern Idaho Public Health Conference Center, PTTC presented on topics including data and systems working together, security and efficient use of resources, skill building and knowledge transfer systems that build long term impacts. We reviewed the systems of pre-planning, developing partnerships and how ready we, and our communities, are as we defined what sustainability meant to us.

Attendees from around the state included public health, coalitions, school districts, suicide prevention groups, parent networks, and the Idaho National Guard. Thanks to PTTC facilitators Michelle Frye-Spray and Jill Parker for their leadership and insight.

The Unconference Format facilitated by Sylvia Ryan & Gina Shatteman

What is an “UnConference?” We weren’t sure, and were intrigued by the concept of bringing people together throughout the state who wanted to create their own topics for discussion.  Coming together on September 10th, we went through the process of setting up an UnConference format and then put that learning into practice.

Several topics for discussion were brainstormed including ways to reach youth, Strategies in social media, developing took kits, organizing to reach more people, business plans, networking, how to strengthen and develop relations with schools, member engagement, parent engagement, effective ways of maintaining partnerships.  It was quite a list to try and cover in the allotted time, so we chose six topics and went to work.
Each topic was discussed by the interested group.  Natural leaders stepped up and notes were taken on topics that were then shared with the group.

We all agreed that an UnConference was the way to go if you wanted to discuss multiple topics in short time frames.  Sincere thanks to Gina Schatteman and Sylvia Ryan for their facilitation of this process.

CCI General
Membership Meeting

The CCI General meeting was held in Idaho Falls on September 9th.  With more than a dozen attendees, we reviewed and approved the minutes of the May meeting and went through the Kaizen assessment process.  Led by our board chair, Rose Cheff, our agenda was full of CCI current events, finances and review of action items.  Coalitions reported on recent successes and upcoming events.  Minutes of the meetings will be posted on the CCI website in draft form in the members section.

Rocky Mountain HIDTA Report Sept. 2019

Everyone, as you know, the Rocky Mountain HIDTA produces one of the most comprehensive reports in the country regarding the consequences of marijuana legalization. Volume 6 has just been made available by Tom Gorman and his excellent staff. I highly recommend this report as a key resource in educating public officials and the general public.  Monte Stiles
