NEWS & EVENTS

Every day and night for a month and a half leading up to the Siemens Healthineers Innovation Think Tank’s annual external exhibition, Kevin Gagnon (right) worked to create a stroke identification app for the competition in Germany. The computer science major and his team, including biology major Jack Gabel (left), only needed ideas in the health care sector, not finished products. But their hard work to create a working app paid off as they beat out 30 teams from colleges around the world for the top award.

Study wants to help you stand up

The NEAT!2 Sedentary Reduction intervention is looking for participants for a study to help reduce sitting time. The program is seeking people older than 40 who have knee pain and a smartphone. Teacher appreciation game set

The Gamecocks are teaming up with the UofSC College of Education and South Carolina Department of Education to host Teacher Appreciation Day at Williams-Brice Stadium on Oct. 19. All teachers, school staff and their families will enjoy a special discount on tickets and will be honored in various ways throughout game day.

Jiajia Zhang, epidemiology and biostatistics, authored “Dyslexia associated functional variants in Europeans are not associated with dyslexia in Chinese” in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.
 
Jorge Crichigno and Niset Hikmet, integrated information technology, Steffen Strauch, physics and astronomy, Andreas Heyden, chemical engineering, and Paul Sagona, Division of Information Technology, received a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for the research project "Building a Science DMZ for Data-intensive Research and Computation at the University of South Carolina."
 
Erica Tobolski, theater, co-presented the panel "From Music to Language: The Roots of Theatrical Expression: at the Voice and Speech Trainers Association conference in Orlando, Fla.
