First of all, wehadababyitsaboy. What an experience! Me, Heather, and our son Wilder are all doing great. As I write this, I'm on paternity and we've eaten tons of leftovers, left the house only a few times, and watched three movies starring Emma Thompson (but probably not the three you'd think of). By the time I send it, I'll be back at work, which seems scary, but also nice to be out of the house. Anyway, here's a newsletter for ya!
Hospitals Should Ask If You Want Food! More of a rant, but during the time we spent at the hospital post part and thinking about other times I've visited friends in the hospital... it's a TON of food waste.

Maybe it's just my picky friends, but most people look at the food, don't eat much of it and give it back. Even worse, something arrives that you're allergic to or don't eat for religious reasons. It feels pretty easy to just ask people their food preferences when they're admitted and not give them food they are likely to throw away. Whadya think?

Some of the most interesting things I read, watched, or listened to in recent weeks:
BuzzFeed: Disney Movies w/Creepy Origins
I knew The Little Mermaid was originally a tragedy, but I had no idea about Belle's evil sisters trying to get the Beast to eat her. Yikes!
FF & Vox: The Trouble With Gentrification
The cast of Freeform's Good Trouble breaks down gentrification and how you can try to avoid being part of the problem in this succinct and sharable video.
New Republic: Give War A Chance
Great piece from last month's New Republic about how Warren is the only Democratic candidate calling out corporations by name and why Dems shouldn't be afraid of a fight. (An Iowa poll from this weekend shows her pulling ahead, and I think this is why!)
If you like doing the New York Times Crossword, you've got to check out Rex Parker's blog. Yes, it shows the solved puzzle so you can cheat – but, more importantly it reviews each puzzle with sometimes scathing results.
"The grid itself is actually fine, it's just the idea of a theme, and esp. *this* already trite-ass internet-driven sponsored-content stupid bullshit please-die pun of a theme. Hateful."
I love the satisfaction of completing a NYT crossword... but when I have trouble with one (which is often), there's nothing like the satisfaction of Rex torching the bizarre 'crosswordese' or ostentatious clueing to make me feel better.
"LOL white men putting VIRTUE SIGNALING in the grid (10D: Sharing of a moral viewpoint to gain social approval). This puzzle is so on-brand. I mean, this is exactly the kind of term I'd expect to find in a puzzle that just this week was reminding us all of the glory of Confederate monuments...

Maybe worry less about VIRTUE SIGNALING and more about filling your grids well, woof. EDATE OCTAL ELOI AGO OLEOLE INSTIR RIEL IDEE PALUP HRE . Maybe you get half of those, but even then only if the rest of the grid is really wonderful (this one isn't)."
One of my co-workers has ALS and the team at Jimmy Kimmel Live is auctioning off items and major experiences from celebrities, athletes and musicians to raise money for three deserving organizations: Project ALSone2one USA Foundation and The ALS Association Golden West Chapter. GET IT is a section where I post talented people looking for work, and great organizations looking to hire. Spread the word, go out there and GET IT! (and if you're a friend looking for gigs, let me know so I can include you on the next one of these)
HIRE THESE PEOPLE:
  1. Rose Feduk is an extremely talented illustrator and storyboard artist I follow on Instagram. Her work is above. She's looking for work at the moment, so if you need an illustrator... look her up!
  2. Clay Larsen is a phenomenal photographer who gets tons of work, but has some openings coming up for portrait photography. Some of his portraits are below. Find him here.
WORK FOR THESE PEOPLE:
  1. RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.– They're hiring at all levels across the country with many positions allowing for remote work. So whether you're an attorney, programmer, designer, or anyone else – get a great job for a great organization!
  2. Elizabeth Warren, AKA the Mom American needs to clean up this mess, has MANY open positions as she ramps up her 2020 candidacy. Roles like Designer, Mobilization/Digital Organizing Directors, HR reps, and more are all posted on her campaign's job site.
  3. The LA Clippers are hiring a cinematographer for their digital video team! Seems like a cool gig if you like basketball.
After reading one of my past issues about split-flap display boards, reader Abel C. got one for his company from Oat Foundry at his work and sent me this video of it in action. I WANT ONE MORE THAN EVER!
Thanks for reading! I'd love to get your feedback. Favorite segment? What's working? What's not working? What do you want to see more of?
