'MONDAY UPDATE'

SCHOOL STRIKE 4 CLIMATE

I have received communication in regard to another proposed 'School Strike 4 Climate' planned for Friday 27th September and would expect publicity in the media if this proposed strike goes ahead.
As communicated previously prior to the strike action held on Friday 15th March, I outline the college's view on this action.

There is no doubt that climate change is an important issue and attention needs to be drawn to this matter to reduce the impact on our planet. It is also important our students reflect on how they can effectively influence change. In my opinion, compromising their education by missing classes will not be effective in bringing about change. There are many other more effective means of both influencing change and having a positive impact on climate change, primarily through their own actions.

At Tauranga Boys’ College we are working to grow awareness on environmental issues and have an active “sustainability committee” focused on making changes in our practices here at the College and in the community.  An example of such constructive action is the "World Car Free Day" being held on Sunday 22nd September.  In order to have an effect for us at the college, our college student sustainability group have proposed a "TBC Car Free Day" on Tuesday 24th September asking staff and students to support this initiative if at all possible.  Any support you can provide for this action to support climate change and sustainability by reducing the use of cars on this day would be greatly appreciated.

I would appreciate you discussing this with your son as raising awareness of this issue and education in this area will enable us to continue to make progress in reducing the impact of climate change.

If you support your son taking part in the strike action and non-attendance at school for the day, his absence from school will need to be explained in the usual manner with a phone call, note or email from his parent/caregiver.
