Top Journalist Talks 'Tough' to Feature Writing Students

Leading political observer and commentator Jonathan Alter was guest speaker at the Feature Writing class Sept. 12. A journalist, filmmaker and bestselling author, and currently a contributing correspondent and political analyst for NBC and MSNBC, Alter gave students some tough advice about making it in journalism.

New Internship Listings

  • amNewYork is looking for journalism students for its fall internship program. Available are an amNewYork editorial internship and an amNY.com fall internship.
  • Slate is hiring a New York editorial intern. The deadline for its winter internship (December through February) is Nov. 1. Learn more and apply.
  • Dow Jones News Fund Internship: Applications are now available for the 2020 Dow Jones News Fund Internship program. College juniors, seniors and graduate students are invited to apply for paid summer 2020 internships in data journalism, digital media, business reporting and multiplatform editing. Deadline for the application and related tests (see below) is Nov. 8.
Current Internship Listings
  • ABC TV has more than a dozen editorial and other internships listings for spring 2020 for network news operations and individual news shows. Meanwhile, ABC's local affiliate WABC-TV has another half-dozen or more internship slots available.
  • NBC News and MSNBC are offering spring 2020 internships at the news network, and its news programs and stations. Find out how to apply.
  • The Wall Street Journal: Apply now for summer 2020 internships. Deadline is Nov. 1. Learn more.
  • Reuters:  The international multimedia news provider is looking for aspiring journalists for its paid 2020 summer internship program, with hands-on reporting positions covering business, political and general news. Find how how to apply.
  • Type Investigations:  This investigative outfit is looking for an entry-level researcher and/or fact-checker with a deep interest in investigative journalism. Find out more and how to apply. Deadline is Sept. 23.
  • Financial Times: Apply now for a paid Fall internship in audience engagement with the Financial Times in New York.  Find out the qualifications and how to apply.
  • Washington Post: The deadline is Oct. 9 for paid summer internships at the Washington Post. Post interns report and write articles, edit copy, take photographs, shoot and edit video, create graphics and design on multiple platforms. Find out the qualifications and how to apply.

Upcoming Events

  • Future of Journalism Conference: The New York State Associated Press, Fordham University and WFUV Public Radio is teaming up to hold a conference on "Succeeding in Changing Times," to be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus. The cost is $10, including lunch. More information and register here.

  • Oct. 23, 1-3 p.m.: Journalism program pizza party. Meet other journalism students and faculty, and  hear more about the journalism concentration and spring course offerings. Location: TV Studio.
  • Oct. 29, 6:30 p.m.: Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism, including an undergraduate student journalism award. Location: Lang Theater. More here. 
  • Nov. 6, 1-3 p.m.: Journalism documentary screening and panel. Location: Lang Theater.
