Autumn has reached the Gunflint Trail, with glowing aspen trees and blazing red moose maples. It's a great time of year for hiking and getting in that last canoe trip while the water's still soft.

"Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves. We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!"  - Humbert Wolfe

Welcome Autumn!

For many people, September means back to school and a return to everyday routines. On the Gunflint Trail, the cooler days and longer nights signal a winding down. The days may be shorter, but suddenly they have a little more margin and you can almost hear the entire community take a deep breath as the fall colors begin to pop.

For us, it's a time to slow down, to reflect on the season that's just passed, and feel a lot of gratitude. We're so thankful for everyone who chose to stay or outfit with us, for all your kind words about the new shower house, and for the wonderful staff that helped us help you.

But the season isn't over yet. We still have a couple weeks of paddling weather left, our winterized cabins are open for the entire month of October, and we have used Kevlar canoes available for sale if you're in the market for a canoe to call your own. Read on for autumn cabin availability, some of our favorite autumn hikes on the Gunflint Trail, and more.

Although we've shut down our three seasonal cabins for the winter (Cabins 2, 4, and 6), our three winterized cabins -  Cabin 3, Cabin 5 and the Lodge - remain open.

Fall is a popular time to visit the Gunflint Trail. Here's our best availability for the next few weeks:

Cabin 3: September 30 - October 4 (4 nights), October 13 - 16 (3 nights), and anytime after October 20.
Cabin 5: October 13 - 15 (2 nights) and anytime after October 20.
We have good availability in the Lodge all of October.

Plan ahead for your summer stay: If you're hoping to stay in one of our cabins in July or August 2020, give us a call at 218-388-2221 to get your reservation on the books as soon as possible.

Christmas and New Year's at Tuscarora: Now's also a great time to finalize holiday plans. At the moment, we have good availability in Cabin 5 and the Lodge over Christmastime.

Take a Hike This Fall

Autumn is a great time to hike on the Gunflint Trail, not only because of the beautiful fall foliage, but also because the views really open up as the vegetation dies back. With average highs in the 50s and 60s, it's a very pleasant time to be moving through the woods.

We've written about some of our favorite fall color hikes on the blog. We've got a couple great fall hikes right in our backyard with the Centennial and Magnetic Rock hiking trails. This time of year, we also love heading up to High Cliffs overlooking Gunflint Lake.

Don't forget about the Gunflint Trail's network of cross-country and snowmobile trails. Although not technically "hiking" trails, these nice, wide trails offer up some of the best views on the Gunflint Trail. If you have someone in your group with limited mobility, Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center near the end of the Gunflint Trail has a couple short hikes that are ADA accessible.

Wildlife Watch

If you were at Tuscarora this summer, chances are you had some sort of interaction with the fox family that decided to call Tuscarora home starting in early June. Mama Fox spent much of last winter in the Tuscarora bird feeder and apparently when her five kits were big enough to move out of their den, she decided to return to her winter home base.

As the kits got older, they got significantly bolder and they startled many a cabin or bunkhouse guest by appearing on the front stoop or sneaking up from behind while people were unloading their cars. Many mornings they could be seen cavorting together on the grounds and they pockmarked the Tuscarora lawns with literal foxholes as they hunted for mice. The grouse and snowshoe hare population in the surrounding acreage took a significant hit.

By mid-August the family was starting to disperse, but the kit pictured above hung around for several weeks after his siblings moved on. He will probably go down as one of the most photographed foxes on the Gunflint Trail.

2020 Staff Member?

It's not too early to apply for a position on the 2020 Tuscarora staff.

Each year, we invite 5-8 staff members to join us for the summer season which runs from May - October. Most staff members start in mid/late May or early June and work until late August.

If you know someone who might love a summer in the woods, they can apply online and learn more about work at Tuscarora here
