[MAEB Projects > Tiny House]

MAEB Students Complete the 2019 Prototype of the Tiny House

Last September 2nd, the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings (MAEB) students presented the prototype of an Advanced Ecological House for a panel of reviewers and invited guests.

This prototype is the collective final project of the 2018-2019 Master course, and the result of 6 weeks of dedicated design and 8 weeks of fabrication and assembly accomplished by students, with the support, guidance and technical assistance of sponsors, specialists and instructors.

IAAC and SCUT Win 2019 UIA-CBC Design and Construction Competition

Bamboo Huts, a collaboration between the South China University of Technology (SCUT) and IAAC Valldaura Labs, won  the 2019 UIA-CBC International Colleges and Universities Competitive Construction Workshop this August.

The competition came to an end with a closing ceremony at Siyang county in East China’s Jiangsu Province. The top winners of the competition were also announced at the ceremony.

Local Industries and Professionals Sponsor MAEB’s Tiny House

MAEB’s 2019 Prototype Tiny House would not have been possible without the sponsorship and support of the many local industries and professionals who volunteered towards realising the project.

From employing advanced analysis strategies to solve complex structural joinery, to thoughtful furniture pieces which elevate the spatial experience, the Tiny House had advocates through every phase of assembly and installation.

CRAFTS Proposal for European Forestry Projects

CRAFTS is an Horizon 2020 EU Project germinated through past related initiatives and developed by IAAC Fab Lab Barcelona, Valldaura Labs and 19 partners across the EU.

CRAFTS, or Climate Resistant Agro-Forestry Transition Systems, will incorporate metagenomic analysis of soil and combine satellite imagery with UAV scans to make computational predictions in order to help farmers transition to climate resistant agriculture.

[MAEB Trips]

MAEB Students Visit SUMA Architects

Last June, MAEB students traveled to Madrid to visit the office and architectural projects of MAEB Faculty Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano of Suma Architects. Suma Architects are long-standing associates of Valldaura Labs, with a strong emphasis on timber structures and timber based-design.

Creative Solutions for Wood Warping

The MAEB team used freshly harvested oak from the Collserola Park for the Tiny House prototype envelope. Students were challenged to find solutions to prevent and reduce the wood warping that occurred after processing the lumber to produce the envelope's shingles.

Volunteers to Build the Tiny House 

In the past month of August, during the intense 4-week construction process of the 2019 Tiny House, MAEB students were pleased to welcome to the Valldaura Labs many volunteers, with different backgrounds and levels of experience, that helped with various aspects of the construction.

MAEB Graduation Ceremony 2019

On September 5th, the MAEB class 2018-2019 graduated in the Valldaura Labs Campus. The students and their families lived a day of celebration and farewell, after a long year full of growth, change and learning.
