Vacant Properties and Property Standards Enforcment
Over the past few years concerns have continued to grow regarding the number of vacant properties. Earlier in June there was a proposal to require these properties to register with the Town, however it created costs for 'snowbirds' and to some degree penalized those who had made arrangements to care for their properties.
The NEW Property standards escalating fees has been well received by residents and Council. The escalating costs make it clear that a property owner needs to put in place a property maintenance plan or they will face substantial fees. We will report back next year on the impact these changes have had.
Example of Impacts of Escalating Penalties & Fees
Cost Recovery Fee Penalty Clean-up Cost* Administration Fee Total Cost to Violator
First Violation $100 $300 $755 $50 $1205
Second Violation $250 $400 $755 $50 $1455
Third Violation $500 $500 $755 $50 $1805
Ongoing $500 $500 $755 $50 $1805
*clean-up cost shown is the average cost charged by contractors hired to effect lot maintenance and property standards orders

Halton Region's Integrated Growth Management Strategy (IGMS) Evaluation Criteria
Ontario is growing and the provincial government has directed Halton Region to plan for 1,000,000 people and 470,000 jobs by 2041.
Halton Region — which includes Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills — is currently determining where those people and jobs should go. A portion of these people and jobs will come to Oakville.
Halton Region has created a number of different growth scenarios of where people and jobs should go within the Region as part of its IGMS. Halton Region also created a set of criteria to use to help choose the best scenario.
Town Council wants your input on which of the criteria are most important to Oakville and how much importance should be given to each criterion. Join us at one of the following meetings or participate in the online survey to give your input. The sessions below are open to ALL residents. The sessions will be the same at each event.

Ward 3 – Tuesday, October 1 -Oakville Public Library – Central Branch, Auditorium,120 Navy Street

Wards 4, 5, 6 and 7 – Wednesday, October 2 River Oaks Community Centre, Community Room B, 2400 Sixth Line

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m.

We Love Oakville is a grassroot residents group that cares deeply about the impact amalgamation will have on Oakville. We have agreed to share  their latest campaign as the clock ticks down on whether we will become a Mega City. Please SEND a LETTER to the Ford Government (it takes less than a minute) to stop higher taxes, service reductions, and the loss of our local voice.

 From We Love Oakville
"There is still a strong likelihood that Oakville will be merged with Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills to form the Megacity of Halton despite claims by our local MPPs. Through a unilateral decision by the Province, our town as we know it can be wiped out.

In August, Premier Ford openly confirmed that some municipalities will soon be amalgamated and the number of local politicians will be reduced. In addition, the special advisors report on the Regional Government Review has been delayed, possibly until after the October federal election.

What could happen - Consider BILL 108 - After only one month of public consultations and at an unprecedented speed, the Ford government passed Bill 108 that affects 13 important Acts. It will increase property taxes and result in the loss of our voice and autonomy over the future of Oakville to the benefit of developers.

It is too late to stop Bill 108, but you can still join over 3,000 residents who have already sent letters to save Oakville.

Please SEND a LETTER to the Ford Government (it takes less than a minute) to stop higher taxes, service reductions, and the loss of our local voice.

Read more about this in the We Love Oakville September e-newsletter.

Halton Regional Police: Road Watch program
We wanted to remind you of the Halton Regional Police Roadwatch program. One more tool in the Traffic Calming toolkit which some residents have reported has been effective.

ROAD WATCH© is a community driven program encouraging anonymous reporting of incidents involving dangerous and/or aggressive driving,* NOT motor vehicle collisions.
A dangerous or aggressive driver should never be approached or confronted by a citizen. Citizens are encouraged to document specific details of ROAD WATCH incidents using the ROAD WATCH ONLINE report. These reports will be viewed by a police officer and if deemed appropriate, a letter may be sent to the registered vehicle owner encouraging all who drive their vehicle to do so in a safe and responsible manner.
Complainants always remain anonymous unless they choose to submit a detailed police report which could result with charges being laid. Such a report may also require the complainant to attend court.

Fall Loose Leaf Collection (where did summer go?)
The town of Oakville Fall loose leaf collection starts on October 21st. Full details and area maps of collection area may be found by following the link.

The town collects about 4,500 tons of bulk leaves annually.
•            Given the variety of tree species within the town, it is not possible to align leaf drops with all trees within every collection zone. However, Oakville’s program does try to accommodate this by providing multiple pick-up times. In addition, the Region’s yard waste collection service is  available for all areas of the town and can be utilized by residents to supplement the town’s collection service. Details on Halton Region’s yard waste collection schedule can be viewed online.
•            The town’s leafing program is also unique in that it includes a spring pickup which is intended to collect leaves that are not collected during the fall service.
•            At the programs peak we utilize 15 town crews and 3 contract crews for leaf collection. The same crews that pickup leaves also perform winter maintenance and extending the pickup schedule into December would not only increase the risk of winter weather preventing us from completing our leaf pickup schedule but would negatively impact our winter control response capabilities, as the same vehicles utilized for leaf collection are also used for winter response.
