Message from the Principal
Dear Emerson Families,
The first official day of fall was Monday, September 23, and many of us know that this time of year often brings intense Northern California heat waves like the one we experienced this week. We want you to know that the children’s safety is a primary concern. We take steps to make sure students are healthy. For example, we remind students to take a water break before they line up to go inside from recess. You can help by dressing your child in light layers that can be adjusted throughout the day. We provide baskets for students who remove their jackets during recess, which are returned to the classrooms so students don’t lose their clothes. We are proud that Emerson school is over a hundred years old, but as a result the building is not equipped with central air conditioning. We do our best to use fans, open windows and encourage water breaks to stay cool and hydrated though the hot days.
The School Safety team recently met and calendared out our 2019- 2020 monthly drills, which include Fire, Earthquake and Intruder exercises. In order to make sure we are ready anytime, some of these drills take place during the after-school programs. If there ever were a real emergency, we would alert families via Remind and/or Robo phone calls. Our first fire drill will take place the morning of Monday, September 30.
As a reminder, we will be closing the School Site Council elections on Friday, September 27. We will post results in the office on Monday, September 30. The first meeting, which includes a training by district office staff, will be on Thursday, October 17 from 5:00 - 8:30pm at Longfellow Middle School. Childcare and dinner will be provided. Feel free to join us for the kickoff meeting. Everyone is welcome. Please contact the school office if you have any questions or concerns.
Finally, let me extend one last invite for you to consider participating in the Fall PTA Equity Circles. Sign-ups are still open through this Friday, September 27, and you can pick up a flyer in the office or find more information at bit.ly/equitycircle. There is no charge to you- food and child care are provided. We hope you will join us.
Thank you,
Jana Holmes, Principal
