CCJ Newsletter 20/09/19

Dear members and friends,

This week I was honoured to present in Liverpool Cathedral to the CCJ Merseyside Branch. Prior to the meeting, chair Liz Spencer treated me to a whistle stop tour of Liverpool's landmarks including meeting the Beatles! I also got an opportunity to look around the UK's largest majestic cathedral. Building of the Anglican Cathedral began in 1904 but due to two world wars was only completed in 1978. You can see from the pictures that it was well worth the effort. It was the first cathedral in Britain to be built by the people for the people and you can tell it is very well loved.

With the Jewish New Year approaching, this was my last regional CCJ visit of this year. It also fell the night before elections in Israel which was very apposite as my presentation focused on the histories and current challenges and opportunities for the Muslim, Christian and Druze citizens of Israel.

I want to thank the CCJ Merseyside Branch for their incredible hospitality and for an interesting discussion after the presentation. It was also very special to meet Revd Canon Dr Neal Barnes and branch member Hazel Verbov, daughter of Revd Leslie Hardman, an Orthodox rabbi who was a chaplain in the British Armed Forces during WW2 and a liberator of Bergen Been camp, working together with my own great uncles of blessed memory, Revd Dr. Isaac Levy, also at the liberation of Belsen.

While I write this our 13th cohort of Christian clergy are attending the Yad Vashem Seminar in Jerusalem. We wish them a meaningful trip. We also look forward to our second In Partnership Consultation Day next week.

Wishing you all a good weekend,

Elizabeth Harris-Sawczenko
Director
