Carers in Mind Autumn Newsletter October-December 2019

Greetings all and welcome to our Autumn edition of our Carers Newsletter. Included below you will find lots of information about our upcoming events and activities to support you in your caring role.

Please do get in touch with our team if you would like more information or are in need of further support.

Staff Changes
Unfortunately our Carers Service Lead, Wendy Oakes, has decided to move on from her role. We will be recruiting for a new Service Lead soon.

To cover this role in the interim, Kathleen Boisseau will be stepping up as our Carers Community Lead - please direct any community related queries to Kathleen.  For any support or queries relating to crisis or hospital support, please continue to contact our Acute Carers Recovery Worker, Georgia Meade.
October Events
Coping with Caring Workshops

Bringing our Carer’s Handbook to Life
(n.b. Previously our Family Workshops)

When: Thursdays October 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th
Time: 6-8pm
Where: 32 Hampton Road, Twickenham, TW2 5QB

Our Coping with Caring course will give you the time and space to reflect on your caring role and the skills that you use to support your cared for.  We will break down the key points of our Carer’s Handbook, going into more detail about navigating the mental health maze, improving communication skills, managing challenging behaviour, and exploring the Recovery Approach and your wellbeing.

These sessions are great for carers new to our service, but also serve as a refresher for long-term carers, as we believe there is always something new to learn, and many people have benefited greatly from the new relationships formed with other carers in a similar situation.

3rd Oct - Navigating the Mental Health Maze
10th Oct - Improving Communication Skills
17th Oct - Managing Challenging Behaviour
24th Oct - The Recovery Approach: Having Hope, & Carer Wellbeing (please note this session will run from 5:30-8:30pm)

But don’t just take our word for it! Here is what our carers say:

"I have enjoyed sharing mistakes and successes and learning about other services available"

"It is useful hearing from people with similar experiences. I now know I need to call the care coordinator for my son"

"I'm grateful that if there is another crisis I'll now know what I'm doing"

Please register your interest with us by Wednesday 2nd October.

We encourage attendance to all sessions but we understand such a commitment can be challenging so we can be flexible.

We would really like to have an experienced carer assisting us to deliver this course; sharing your knowledge and gained skills over the years would be so valuable to other carers. Whether you can attend all sessions or just one please let us know if you would be able to help!!

Carers Connect Workshops
Volunteers Needed

Carers Connect is an initiative we started to encourage carer peer support and the network is growing into a range of support groups ran by carers, for carers. We have some fantastic ideas for more Carers Connect Workshops including an informal chatty group, a walking football group, a singing group...the list goes on! However we need help to run these workshops moving forward.

We will provide you with training and we will support you with setting up the practicalities of the workshop including finding an appropriate location and sending out communications. In addition, you will get monthly check-ins to discuss how the workshop is going and how we can continue to support you.

We aim to have around 3 volunteers per workshop to ensure the delivery of a session isn't dependent on one person as well as ensuring there is enough support for the group facilitators - you will never be left on your own!

If you would like to get involved please contact us at carers@rbmind.org
Art Workshops

When: Fridays on 4th October, 1st November, 6th December
*Please note these are now run on a monthly basis*
Time: 10am-12pm
Location: 32 Hampton Road, Twickenham, TW2 5QB

Please come along to our monthly art workshops led by one of our very talented carers. We have had fantastic feedback from our carers, many of whom have said they find it relaxing and that it allows them to have time out for themselves. All art supplies will be provided. This is a group for all abilities so all welcome!

To sign up or to find out more, please contact us via email at carers@rbmind.org or reply to our text reminder.

Yoga Workshops

*Please note the two different dates/locations*

When: Fridays on 11th and 18th October,
Time: 9:30am-10:30am
Location: 32 Hampton Road, Twickenham TW2 5QB

When: 1st and 15th November, 6th December
Time: 9:30am-10:30am
Location: Richmond Oddfellows, 15 Parkshot, Richmond, TW9 2RG

We have found an alternative venue for our yoga workshops; this is a larger, quieter space in a location more central to the borough and across the road from Richmond Station.

Interested..?  Hear what our lovely yoga instructor, Anne-Marie, has to say:
‘I have been practicing yoga for over 20 years, as it’s the only activity I’ve found that can switch off my busy mind and leave me feeling refreshed physically and mentally.

My teaching is based on traditional Hatha yoga and I tailor classes based on each student’s needs. I always bring a sense of playfulness to my classes as I help people to stretch and relax.’

There is limited space at these sessions so attendees MUST sign up to ensure your place is booked.

Once we move to the Richmond Oddfellows location, we will ask for a £3 contribution for these lessons (to support room hire costs).

Movement for Wellbeing Workshops

When: These take place the first Monday of every month (7th October, 4th November, December date TBC)
Time: 7pm-8:30pm
Location: 32 Hampton Road, Twickenham, TW2 5QB

These are led by our wonderful Michelle Frost . The workshop is best described by Michelle below:

"The Movement for Well-Being classes were inspired by my own transformative experience with movement practice over the last few years. I have found the simple practice of mindfully moving to music an incredibly powerful way to transport the mind and body into a deeply present and positive state. I have also found it a wonderful way to reconnect with myself and those around me.

Working mindfully to music can connect us to primal experiences from a time before there were words and concepts, and it allows the body to tell us stories the mind has forgotten.

The structure of the class is a short opening circle followed by movement followed by a closing circle. This allows us to speak. move and speak again. What emerges in the movement can be integrated in the holding circle. The class is an individual practice with optional partner work along the way.

The movement part is free-form and semi-structured and allows for freedom to express our unique self within a supportive environment. The music follows a journey with a calm/flow beginning, into a more vigorous intense middle, entering into more still, silent end. You can express playfulness, passion, sadness, laughter, whatever needs to be expressed in the dance.

This is a gentle, accessible practice and is open to all.

As it's not a dance class, there are no set steps, so leave the leotards behind and bring your two left feet. They will be more than welcome!"

To sign up or to find out more, please contact us via email at carers@rbmind.org or reply to our text reminder.

We can offer emotional support, signpost to other services, provide guidance through the mental health maze, and develop a plan together to support you with moving forward.

If this is something you feel you need, please do not hesitate to email us on carers@rbmind.org or telephone us on 020 8940 7384 and we will aim to get back to you within 5 working days.
