GREETINGS PADDLERS!
WELCOME BACK to regular meetings, the joy of summer memories, and autumn rains that allow the parched Earth to breathe a huge sigh of relief.  It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces at the September monthly meeting, and to welcome new friends.  If you find yourself inside sorting through photos of summer trips, remember to contact newsletter@nanaimopaddlers.org to submit tales of your adventures for everyone to appreciate.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING AND OCTOBER MEETING
Beban Park, Room 2, 7 pm.

The  Board of Directors is proposing to increase membership fees to $35 per year with the increase to be phased in over two years. A meeting to review this motion is to be held during the next monthly meeting which will be held on Wednesday, October 2, at the Beban Recreation Centre at 7pm.

According to Section 3 of Nanaimo Paddlers’ Bylaws, changes to membership fees must be approved by a majority of members at an annual general meeting - which in our case regularly occurs in February.  There is a provision however, that the Board may call an extraordinary general meeting whenever it deems necessary.

Since delaying a decision would cause significant budgeting and operational problems for 2020, the Board has decided to call this extraordinary meeting of all members to vote on the membership fee increase.
Please refer to the attached Balance Sheet and Income Statement for the most current financial information. This information will be discussed in detail and in context of our budgetary requirements over the next few years during our meeting. Please plan to attend!

On a lighter note, our speaker for October is Lou McKee.  Lou's new book, Klee Wyck Journal, is full of beautiful illustrations and stories of the people and adventures involved in the building of a coastal wilderness shelter, hidden among old rainforest firs, cedars, and dense salad bush, reached only by an ocean kayak journey.  Come hear the story...from dream to reality.

RECENT EVENTS
End of Season Splash and Picnic
After a change of day, 3 potential locations, and a a big rain shower on Sunday morning, the yearly picnic took place at Transfer Beach in Ladysmith, as the rain stopped and the sky began to brighten. We had a shelter for the occasion, but it wasn’t really necessary. Luckily, it turned into quite a beautiful day! Sixteen people attended and had lunch together, before heading to the water for some practice rescues, paddle strokes and games.
With ocean temperatures still fairly warm, it was good fun.  After getting wet, everyone went up to the shelter to enjoy a chat, coffee and hot chocolate, next to Susan's portable gas fireplace.  A great time was had by all.  (Thanks to Louise Thompson for this summary, and Susan Gueulette for her photos,)

UPCOMING EVENTS
NEWCASTLE ISLAND SHORELINE CLEANUP
Join us Saturday, October 5, for our annual shoreline clean up. This is our second try, so we're hoping the weather cooperates.  The plan is to meet at Brechin boat ramp, to be divided into groups at 10 am.  We will gather garbage on the shoreline around Newcastle Island, which will be ferried back to the launch in canoes and a skiff.  The debris will then be trucked to the Transfer Station.  Please email Linda at plmcphie536@gmail.com if you can provide a canoe or a truck, or would like to help paddle a canoe.
Each participant should bring a couple of garbage bags, gloves and a container for glass. Shoes suitable for shoreline scrambling should be worn. If you have a VHF radio and an operating license, please bring it.

Bring a picnic lunch to eat on Newcastle Island after the clean up.

There is pay parking at the boat launch. Some members may wish to launch elsewhere and paddle to Brechin for 10:00 A.M. to be organized into groups.

BCMT CORNER
As a member club of BC Marine Trails, there are many ways you can offer your time and talents to this growing organization.  While there are yearly cleanups on remote beaches, or invasive species removal projects that are ongoing on Gerald Island in Nanoose, there are many other ways you can become involved.  Consider this request from one of the directors:

Many of you know about the BC Marine Trails Network Association and their mission to create a network of marine trails on our coast. The work to complete this vision, preserving public access to public sites for paddlers and small boats from Victoria to the Alaska border, includes 12 paddling clubs (including Nanaimo Paddlers), First Nations, industry groups, and multiple levels of government.

The BCMT organization is now poised to move to a new level of activity in 2020. Volunteers with IT skills are now needed to help roll out new digital tools. If you have web skills (experience with Joomla! CMS would be great), you are needed sooner than later. If you have worked with Content Management Systems, but not Joomla!, we can train you.

If you want to volunteer with BC Marine Trails, whether you have IT skills or not, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator karen@bcmarinetrails.org She will be glad to help you find a role that suits you.
