Manitoba Bats at Risk

A local citizen science project wants you to be on the lookout for bats flying outside this winter. Bats typically stay warm and cozy when there is snow on the ground (about November to May), but a disease called White-nose syndrome is causing some bats to wake from hibernation too often or too early. This disease could completely wipe out some of Manitoba's bat species. Learn more about White-nose syndrome and how you can help manitoba's bats here.

2019/20 Discovery Evenings

We are pleased to announce our lineup of speakers for this year's Discovery Evening series! This program has been going strong since Nature Manitoba was founded in 1920, and it's part of our ongoing commitment to nature education.

These talks do not require registration, and all are welcome to attend. They are available for the low cost of $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Have a look at the topics below and read more about all our Discovery Evenings here. We hope to see you there!

See our full Discovery Evening lineup here.

October Discovery Evenings

October 7 - Polar Bears of the Western Hudson Bay: Manitoba is home to the polar bears of the western Hudson Bay while on land during the Hudson Bay's ice-free period.  Come out and learn more about this Icon of the North.  This presentation will provide current information on denning activities, distribution, feeding habits and the effects of Climate Change.

October 21 - Birding & Touring in West Africa: This presentation will focus on Senegal and The Gambia with special attention to the birds and culture of these areas. Long popular with British birders, The Gambia especially is becoming increasingly attractive as an "ornitholiday".

Farewell to Tim Poole

In late September Nature Manitoba had to say goodbye to our IBA and Chimney Swift Monitoring Coordinator, Tim Poole. During his time at NM Tim has spearheaded several new initiatives, worked with many volunteers, and been a pleasure to have in the office! He will be missed, and we wish him the best of luck with his future career pursuits. Read more about Tim here.

Volunteer Opportunities

Nature Manitoba is turning 100! We are celebrating our centennial in 2020 and we are looking for communications volunteers to help with our 100th anniversary plans. We are also looking for people to sit on our Communications Committee. More information about these opportunities here.
