Dear Friend,

People often ask me if I do any legislative work when we are out of session, which runs from early May to early January. Yes I do! But, I also take some time for my family, too. In this newsletter, I will highlight some of the work and some of the fun I have enjoyed over the summer.

SAVE THE DATE: Our next town hall meeting will be Saturday, September 14, 9-10 am at Leawood City Hall. Transportation Secretary Julie Lorenz will be our special guest.

School is back in session now and students are settling into their study routine. I enjoyed the hundreds of back-to-school pictures friends and constituents posted on Facebook. Here is a picture of me on my first day of kindergarten:

50 years after this picture, my kindergarten teacher saw my father’s obituary in the paper and she sent me a condolence card. She was not a family friend, but a wonderful person who cared deeply for her students and recognized a name decades later. Lift up a quick prayer to all the teachers and staff beginning the new year – and the parents celebrating the end of summer.

About the 20th

Earlier this month, I filed for re-election to continue as your State Representative. In my first two terms in the House, we have achieved much; the state is in much better financial shape thanks to restoration of fiscal common sense; KPERs is now being funded to assure secure retirement for state workers; KDOT is advancing on road repairs and improvements; and most importantly, education is now being fully funded and approved by the Kansas Supreme Court.

But…our work is not yet done. I am running for re-election to expand Medicaid to provide healthcare to the most vulnerable in Kansas, while eliminating the emergency room as primary care (which in turn will lower the cost of care for all of us). We have paid out more than $3 billion in Medicaid taxes and received nothing in return. That must change.

We still need to stop borrowing from the highway fund. We need to reduce the sales tax on food. We must be vigilant to continue a fiscally responsible budget which funds basic services like protecting children in foster care.

There is much more to do. I appreciate your support and vote. Today, I ask you to make a contribution - $5 to $500, every dollar helps – to my campaign. I expect to have a challenger from the right in the primary and the left in the general election. Such is life when you are reasonable in your views – not extreme either way. You can donate online or mail a check to Kessinger4Kansas, 12605 Walmer, OPKS, 66209.

Here’s some of the more non-legislative things I’ve been doing over the summer. I hope your summer was equally fun and memorable.

In July, I took my granddaughter, Brooklyn to her first baseball game. She enjoyed the concessions and the fireworks. The game did not register with her.
In July, Jeanne and I took our local grandchildren, Gavin and Ella, on a vacation to the Southwest, including Antelope Canyon in Utah (pictured). We also stopped in Hutchinson for a tour of the Cosmosphere and Strataca; Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Arches National Parks. It was a fantastic trip!
I run into the nicest people in the community. Like when I ran into my son in-law, Todd Buffington at the Blue Valley Educational Foundation breakfast. The breakfast honored the great successes of Blue Valley Schools...and raised more than $25,000!
I love this picture of our three girls, Julee Bailey of Dallas, Carrie Gillette of Houston, and Courtney Buffington of Stilwell. They were together to celebrate Courtney’s 40th birthday.
Yours in service,
