Founders Day 20th Anniversary celebration

Autumn is almost here.  That means Founders Day won’t be far behind.  We hope you have been reading the past articles regarding the special activities that will be happening the weekend of October 12 and 13.
The last activity to announce is that on Saturday night, we will have an area set up in the Religious Education room for guests to take fun photos.  We will even have some cool props you can use!
This will be a weekend of festivities and fellowship.  If you will be attending the dinner on Saturday night, please RSVP to founders2019@uubeaufort.org by September 25.

October 12 and 13 – a weekend to celebrate UUFB!

Trivia question…… Who wrote and sang the song “1999”?
(The answer will be in next week’s newsletter.)

Minister's Coffee With Newcomers

Have you been attending for awhile? Considering membership? Wondering who to ask questions about UUFB, or Unitarian Universalism?

Wonder no longer! In addition to our periodic Connections Class, Rev. Lori and the Membership Committee will be hosting regular “Minister’s Coffees” during fellowship hour in the Minister’s Study. Simply get your favorite beverage (and a snack if you like) and join us! We’d love to get to know you better – and let you get to know us better!

First Minister’s Coffee is Sunday, Sept. 15th! See you there!

On September 21st, hundreds of us will take to the streets of Port Royal to bring safe water for life to thousands of men, women and children across the world.  This more than a walk. It's an event that will have impacts on people forever by providing lasting solutions that save lives. Join us as we walk so others won't have to.

Why Walk?

Every day, millions of women and children in developing countries walk over three miles to retrieve water for their family's daily needs.  In most cases, the water they collect is contaminated.  Every 37 seconds one person dies from water-related illnesses. This is a global water crisis.

Imagine that as little as $25 in the hands of Water mission could provide one person safe water for life.  A donation of $500 could provide a latrine for sanitation in a community.  Solar panels for an average-sized project are less than $1100.  How much will you help us raise this year?  It's time to #PickUpTheBucket.

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Project Update

UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity’s Faith Build House, located at 2523 Mossy Oaks Road.  The house’s exterior is now in place, so the remaining volunteer work is ground-level and mostly indoors.  The nature of the work will continue to change as the build progresses towards its targeted completion date around the end of August.

Effective July 18, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity has changed its volunteer sign-up process for the Faith Build.  Now, volunteers from any faith group can sign up directly on the Habitat site, in any combination, up to a limit of ten per day.  Those who have completed the 1-hour orientation program can sign up for any Tuesday through Saturday they wish.  However, we are identifying every Thursday and the occasional Saturday (8/3/19) as days for concentrations of UUFB volunteers.  Working together will be a great opportunity to act on our values, to build relationship among our own members and friends and others, in a no-proselytizing interfaith experience.

Those who are interested, and have not yet completed a 1-hour orientation program may attend the next session on Saturday August 10 at 10am, at the Habitat office (616 Parris Island Gateway).  Please call Lee McSavaney 843-522-3500 at the Habitat office to attend.

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

After last Sunday’s Water Ceremony, I was asked if I could publish the meditation created by everyone’s writings on water, which was read as we poured our waters into the common bowl. Someone else suggested it could be my column this week.

I am delighted to offer those words here! Thank you, everyone who participated in this year’s water service. It is always a special service.

Blessings,
Rev. Lori Hlaban

UUFB Water Ceremony 2019 – Water Words and Wisdom

Water is holy. Water is pure. Water is gentle, yet it holds the power to wash away mountains. Bring your sorrows to the water and watch them be eroded away.

My ancestral waters, Lewis Brook and Lake, newly found in Harriman, NY.

I love the feel of putting cool water over my face/hair when I’m hot. I love to watch the waves of the ocean flowing in and out, the rhythm it creates is entrancing.

My water comes metaphorically from the Pacific Ocean, wild and cold, and from Hunting Island State Park, gentle and warm, both giving life to whales, baby sea turtles, and us. We are united by our need for and reverence for its elemental power.

You just don’t realize how essential water is – until you don’t have it.

Living near water is good for my spirit.

The luxury of clean bottled water and tub full for flushing if needed.

Water: May there be enough for all, yet not too much to create destruction.

Water has brought me stability.

My water is a small token of the water I wish for those without sufficient water – my heart aches for them.

Lying on my back, floating with eyes closed and hear the water lap on around me. What a day.

…I believe that every moment of this life is Holy. Each morning’s shower or bath, a float in the river, or a swim in the ocean can be like baptism and begin the next blessed moment in this life.

The waves of the sea, nourishment for the body – hydration.

The water I poured was brought to me by Hurricane Dorian – such a blessing that Dorian did not devastate the Lowcountry. Water can destroy as well as it usually nurtures us.

The waters of Beaufort brought great joy and peace to my daughters. I can see them there yet today.

Clean water to drink is usually a delicate balance of human efforts.

Water is the essence of life.

As water is neither created nor destroyed, all water, over eons, has been everywhere on Earth many times. My water is from the Bay of Fundy.

Water from a waterfall in Bavaria, a reminder of its beauty everywhere.

The gurgling sound of Culp Creek soothes the mind and soul. From a trickle in the dry season to rushing creek in spring rains, in western N.C.

Water is life. Whenever scientists search other planets for life, they look for signs of water. Water is love. Happy or sad, tears show love. Water is…?

Peace like a River flows.

I miss the water from my home in NY, from my well and free.

For a month this summer Ocean Beach in San Francisco was a short walk from our rented apartment. We walked the beach often – morning, evening, high tide and low, fog (lots of fog) and sun – always at the edge of the sea, feeling the water of the vast Pacific – the water of life – in our toes – connected to our primordial past.

Beauty and power of ancient seas: the calm Atlantic here, and the wild, rocky shore of the Pacific Northwest.

Water from my hot water heater which ruptured on Monday (the day of evacuation).

Water from Chautauqua Lake whose waters formed many days of joy for my children – swimming, sailing, ice skating – time together celebrating pleasures on and in lake waters.

Water floats our second home and nourishes the plants that contribute to human existence.

Left home for a new start, better life, but could not forget the warmth of the waters near home.

The water from the Beaufort River, cold and churned up from experiencing the hurricane.

Love the Water!

Stewardship Updates!
Thank goodness Hurricane Dorian is gone!  Hope everyone is safely home.  She has left us but has caused two of our Cottage Meetings to be postponed.  The new schedule is listed below:

September 8 at 5:00 pm – Mary Mack  (POSTPONED, to be rescheduled)
September 16 at 6:30 pm – Jennifer Rhodes
September 22 at 6:00 pm – Barb Banus
September 28 at 7:00 pm – Caren Ross

The committee hopes that all members will attend one of these meetings.   If you are not available to join your neighborhood circle’s gathering, please attend one of the other meetings.  Please just let that host know.

There will be food, information and door prizes. We will also be handing out pledge forms for 2020.  If you start planning you may be able to complete your form that night and hand it in.  This would be greatly appreciated.  If not, that is okay too.  We just ask that they be turned in by the October 21 deadline.

If you have any questions, please email stewardship@uubeaufort.org.

Thanks for your Time – Talent – Treasure!
