The voice of youth workers!
NEWSLETTER Autumn 2019 Chair's Update Whilst there have been some really exciting developments in the youth work world recently including:
· the DCMS’ review of the statutory guidance to local authorities on the provision of youth services · the Home Affairs Committee advocating for youth work in their Serious Violence Review, and · a new Minister with responsibility for Youth (Work)
…the Institute for Youth Work have been working hard to ensure that the sector has strong representation from youth workers themselves.
We have continued to build our cross-youth sector support for a Register for Youth Workers. This voluntary Register is intended to provide a whole host of benefits, whilst supporting ever yone who works and volunteers in the Youth Work world. These include:
· Knowing who is actually working with this country’s young people – and how many of us there are. · Understanding the level of qualification of those working with young people (and potentially supporting them to access additional training/education). · Understanding where Youth Work is concentrated around the country (and how we can promote a more considered distribution)
Also, if we, as a profession, were ever asked to be regulated or choose to regulate ourselves, the sector itself would have ownership of how this was done.
A critical factor in the progress of this project has been worker capacity at the IYW. As you’ll know, the IYW has, since its independence from the NYA in 2014, been run by volunteers elected from the membership. We have been working towards employing our very first staff member, which would help us shift gear with all of our work including the Youth Work Register, and with the extremely kind support of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation we are now close to recruiting!
Please keep an eye out for future messages if you might be interested in working for the Institute for Youth Work. As we enter into what will be a new era in the life of the Institute for Youth Work, we hope that you will continue with us on this journey – and of course spread the word! New members are always welcome. Adam Muirhead, Chair, Institute for Youth Work LATEST NEWS
