Donna Washington, MD, MPH, received a 2019 Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust Award. This year’s awardees were selected based their unique support of women Veterans, as well as for their service to the wider Veteran community.
The Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust (CBCVB) serves as an advisory group for the entire Congressional Black Caucus, members of Congress, and Veterans’ organizations on the many issues that specifically impact the African American Veteran community. Each year, the CBCVB Forum provides Veterans and other stakeholders an opportunity to engage in a productive discussion with national leaders on the challenges that African American Veterans face both today as well as in the past. Dr. Washington was invited to speak about her research on quality of care, racial disparities, and women Veterans’ health as they relate to the experiences of African American women Veterans.

Welcome Dr. Kate Dovel
We would like to welcome Kate Dovel to the GIMHSR Glendon Offices. Kate is a behavioral scientist and faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She has a Ph.D in Health and Behavioral Sciences and MPH in Community Health Sciences. Kate’s research focuses primarily on HIV services for men and youth in Sub-Saharan Africa and she is regularly involved in global policy development aiming to improve men’s engagement in health systems. She is the PI (Co-PI: Risa Hoffman) for two HIV self-testing (HIVST) trials in Malawi, where she has lived for the last 6-years leading implementation science studies focused on innovative HIV service delivery strategies. She recently received a K01 to develop and pilot a trial aimed at increasing ART initiation and retention among men who use HIVST in Malawi. Kate and her 8-year old daughter enjoy travelling and exploring their new city (Santa Monica) by roller blading on the boardwalk. We are excited to have Kate as a colleague in the Glendon Building, much of her research is complementary to domestic HIV related projects that are underway in the division and we all are looking forward to learning more about her research.
