Nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day; Watch Your Car Program; Emergency Preparedness

September 13, 2019

PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK

The Takoma Park Police Department will once again participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This campaign gives the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your prescriptions to the Takoma Park Police Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912. Collection boxes will be set up in the first floor police lobby of the City building. Prescription, over-the-counter and pet medications will be accepted.

Although we continue to participate in this nationwide event, as a reminder, residents looking to dispose of excess and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications can visit the safe and secure permanent drop off location at the City of Takoma Park Police Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, 1st Floor Lobby, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912. The collection site is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Drugs can be dropped off with no questions asked. Items that CANNOT be left are liquids, inhalers, aerosol cans, regular household ointments/lotions, needles/sharps and/or thermometers. The Takoma Park Police Department will collect and store these items and then safely dispose of them through accepted practices as done in past Take Back Events.

WATCH YOUR CAR PROGRAM

Takoma Park Police will also offer residents an opportunity to sign up for the “Watch Your Car Program.” This program is a way for police officers to ensure your vehicle is not being driven by an unauthorized driver.

What is the Watch Your Car Program?

The "WATCH YOUR CAR" program is administered by the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council (MVTPC) and is provided as a public service, free of charge, to owners of vehicles registered in the State of Maryland. It is a voluntary vehicle registration program designed to deter auto theft and assist in the apprehension of auto thieves.

How does it work?

The owner(s) sign an application form stating their vehicle is not normally used between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am which gives permission for a police officer to stop the car between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am to verify that the driver is actually the owner of the vehicle or an authorized driver, designated by the owner. Once registered, the vehicle owner will receive two window decals to be placed on the front and back windows of the vehicle. You will need to have your Driver’s License, vehicle information (tag number, make, year, model, style and color) as well as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Emergency Preparedness Manager will also have a table set up with safety/emergency information.
