For what it's worth, Maven Sports reports USC "is in deep discussions with Villanova AD Mark Jackson, per multiple sources informed of the situation. The development has been in the works for several months, with USC currently looking at Jackson's buyout." The article points to former Trojans/current Seattle Seahawks HC Carroll as a major advocate of Jackson's, adds, "While the school has given strong consideration to hiring an outsider, a candidate with previous experience as an AD has been deemed even more important. […] USC approached North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham about its vacancy but he declined." (link); Mind blown: Online sports books have set odds on who will be the next USC AD. Washington State's Chun is the favorite at +100, followed by the likes of Interim AD Roberts (+400), Colorado's George (+800), UNLV's Reed-Francois (+1100), Colorado State's Parker (+1100), Jackson (+1100) & Iowa State's Pollard (+1100). Houston mega-donor & board chair Fertitta talks to Texas Football's Jeyarajah on a number of angles impacting the Cougars. On the Big 12's expansion process a couple of years back, "It’s a shame. We belong in the Big 12. All those people a couple years ago said they were going to help us and it was all talk and it was all bullshit. We want to be in one of the major Power Five conferences." Is UH being blocked by other B12 institutions in the state? "It appears that way. It’s disappointing but simple facts speak for themselves. Why would you want another school that can compete for that athlete?" There's also this, as he pushes for longterm loyalty from key leaders, "Well, obviously I made a bad judgement when I took Hunter Yurachek and made him athletic director. I wasn’t even going to interview him, but I really liked him and he said, 'I have no desire to go anywhere else, I want to raise my kids in Houston.' In 18 months, he goes to Arkansas." More. (link)
Fair Pay to Play: San Diego State AD Wicker, "I think the frustration for me is that they probably don't truly understand the NCAA and how we work as a governing body. Again, it's schools across 50 states and it's all of us working together, whereas the state of California will only harm California schools." (link); Under Armor boss Plank on CNBC yesterday, "There are athletes driving incredible value for the institutions & frankly they should be fairly compensated & I’m not sure that is exactly the case today." (link); Reports out of Colorado say the state legislators could consider a bill next cycle that could "allow direct payments" to student-athletes. (link); Former NBA/Arizona star Arenas in response to Stephen A. Smith's Instagram post on SB206: "Ummm (this is America) and every school u named those players get paid way more anyway (emojis) u really think players are going to duke without being paid over Kentucky??? I know two players in the last 5 years that's gotten (200k) to attend duke [100%]." (link)
U.S. District Judge Wood praised former financial adviser Sood for his cooperation in the MBB-FBI developments and spared him from prison, instead issuing a $25K fine. Sood testified at two trials that "resulted in the convictions of several men charged in the bribery case" and "provided information the government didn't previously know about as it built its case." Sood apologizes to "the people I hurt the last few years. ... I have no one to blame but myself." (link)
According to an internal report at Texas, the temperature in the visiting locker room was 68 degrees when LSU arrived at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, and after the Tigers left, the temperature was 74 degrees. The report, which was ordered by AD Del Conte, used data collected from air conditioning sensors in the locker room. Meanwhile, Del Conte affirmed comments from Louisiana Tech FB HC Holtz, who said this week that he had no issues with the locker room temperature during the teams’ opener two weeks ago. Further, Holtz indicated no one from LSU contacted him about the matter. Del Conte: “[Louisiana Tech AD McClelland] called me personally and told me no one from LSU reached out to he or Skip [Holtz] about any air-conditioning issue." Alabama has taken the step of offering improved access to FB postseason matchups for students who stay until the fourth quarter of home games. To do so, the New York Times reports, the school is using the Tide Loyalty Points app to track students’ locations. AD Byrne this week said privacy concerns rarely came up when the idea was discussed with other campus departments and student groups and maintained that students’ locations will only be tracked inside the stadium. He also pointed out that “if anybody has a phone, unless you’re in airplane mode or have it off, the cellular companies know where you are.” However, Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Schwartz asserts that it’s “very alarming” for a public institution to track students’ whereabouts and “inappropriate” to offer incentives for students who surrender their privacy. Interim Vanderbilt Chancellor Wente has appointed a nine-member Faculty Athletics Committee tasked with providing periodic advice to university leaders on issues related to college athletics; assisting with the design and refinement of policies at the intersection of academic and athletic concerns; assisting with the establishment of policies to facilitate student-athlete recruitment and integration into the university community; monitoring and reviewing trends in student-athlete academic issues; and assessing services linked to academic issues that are provided to student-athletes, such as tutoring and mental health and wellness. Like Mississippi State peer Cohen earlier in the week, ECU AD Gilbert wholly unsatisfied with the operation of his FB concessions last weekend, especially slow moving lines, promises improvements. Gilbert also mentions a need for better "presentation," adds, "In my opinion, we left some money on the table because of how slow it took for us to process people through the lines. Our credit card machines were slow. We are working to resolve all of that." $50K worth of beer sales in the first go round for the Pirates. (link)
SBJ's Smith catches up with Taymar Sales U. founder/former IMG & Host executive Dyer on trend lines around ticket sales around the nation, "The challenge in this business is how big should your stadium be? It's expensive to change out seating capacity. [...] Schools are very, very conscious of what the guest experience is now. In the new normal, there's probably a lot of stadiums that have too many seats. […] In our business, we're looking to reach out to the fans in a more personal way. Not just the highest contributing donors, but all season-ticket holders, all regular customers and season-ticket holders who have let their seats lapse. ... We’re capturing their data so that we can contact them the Monday of the following week, and ask them how their experience went and try to get them to commit to being involved." (link)

The Los Angeles Times’ Fenno points out that five years before the Operation Varsity Blues admissions scandal, UCLA was alerted to the now-confirmed misdealings perpetrated by The Key Founder Singer. The school investigated a situation involving a fraudulent water polo recruit and, according to a spokesman, put in place a series of reforms; however, Singer, who was not the focus of the investigation and who denied any wrongdoing, continued to forge ties with the school. Former federal prosecutor Simon contends that UCLA should’ve done more, up to and including letting authorities know: “Had they done so at the time, UCLA would not be enmeshed in the current scandal.” More. Michigan is next, with a three-year average revenue of just under $140M, followed by Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Georgia, each of which surpassed the $120M revenue mark. Full list & data. As Wake Forest and North Carolina prepare to meet for a non-conference game this weekend, Daily Press columnist Teel submits that it’s time to revisit the ACC’s scheduling model, which pits cross-divisional opponents against one another just once every six years. Teel contends that the league should move to a nine-game schedule but acknowledges that such a path may be intractable considering Notre Dame’s contract to play just five games against ACC teams, and four members (Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Florida State) who play in-state SEC rivals each year. UNC AD Cunningham on the topic, “Just off the top of my head I would consider it (again). I like playing Wake Forest. I like playing conference schools. I’m a proponent of nine conference games…[and] I believe the best rivalries are ones who live closer to each other. Virginia Tech AD Babcock adds: “I know as ADs we will continue to look at ways to shorten that six-year cycle. … It’s a bunch of new people in the room, so I’m sure it will come up.” (link)

A gift of this kind is paramount to our momentum and we are very appreciative." (link)
Kent State Prez Diacon has ordered an investigation into the Field Hockey-fireworks situation from last weekend, calls it a "regrettable decision," pens an email to the KSU community that includes, "All week, I have been thinking of the visiting student-athletes who spent countless hours practicing and preparing for a tournament on our campus, and of the parents who traveled here to show their support. We can, and must, do better. ...
