What We're Listening To:

New Release Corner: Friday the 13th Edition

Pack up the offspring It's a busy day, so snap up all these new platters and then head over to Blockbuster to rent a pile of Friday the 13th flicks for the big weekend binge-o-thon. Don't forget the Twizzlers!

Belle and Sebastian - Days of the Bagnold Summer (Matador)
The Scottish indie outfit scores an indie film based on a graphic novel about a troubled teen and his single mother. 21st Century twee alert!

Shawn Colvin - Steady On (30th Anniversary Acoustic Edition) (SLC)
Folk star Colvin re-recorded her popular debut album without all that ‘80s studio gunk, returning the songs to their essential being. Sometimes it’s the notes you don’t play …

Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Interscope)
The young Brit’s Dead Boys EP was a favorite of loyal pod listener Gerald Chyzenski last year. Now Fender’s debut album, with an arena-rock sound, is drawing comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, although it’s closer to the Killers.

Glorious Sons - A War on Everything (BMG)
We just featured this band on the pod - classic guitar rock from Canada. It’s good to keep your blood pumping on those long, cold winters.

Lumineers - III (Dualtone)
The third album from this Denver Americana act has been a slow rollout - a planned series of EPs, released over time as “chapters” that are now combined into a larger work. Back in Hank Williams’ day, they called that putting out records.

Pixies - Beneath the Eyrie (BMG)
It’s been five years since Black Francis got the band back together to record again (albeit without key member Kim Deal). This is their third album of the new era, even if it sounds like it belongs in a time since passed.

The Rough & Tumble - Howling Back at the Wounded Dog (self-released)
This couple (Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler) travels around the U.S. in a camper, playing shows wherever folks will have them, and every so often lays some tender gems to tape for the world to experience. Enjoy.

Gruff Rhys - Pang! (Rough Trade)
The Super Furry Animals’ leader has a new solo album, recorded in his native tongue: Welsh. Great pop music transcends language.

Twin Peaks - Lookout Low (Grand Jury)
We featured an advance single from this album on episode 657. The Chicago band makes danceable rock with a laid-back groove that can both help you get pumped up in the morning and wind down at night.
