Watch videos from our Repton conference

We think it’s important that as many people as possible can access garden history. We have therefore made films of the talks given by County Gardens Trust researchers at the Discovering the Real Repton symposium at the Garden Museum last November. These are now available to view online at http://thegardenstrust.org/research/videos/. We hope you enjoy watching them, and will share them with others who might like them too.

The Gardens Trust Events

The Getty Library, Meet Ups and the Historic Landscape Assembly

There are places left for the exclusive visit on 24 October to the Getty Library on the Wormsley Estate, arguably the most impressive library in Britain. Find out more about the library or head to our website to snap up your place.

This Sunday we are running a Heritage Afternoon in association with the Friends group at Grovelands Park, North London, which was laid out by Repton. There will be guided walks and talks plus fun things for all the family.

Our beginners course, An Introduction to Garden History, sold out within days of being announced, so we are hoping to run it again in the spring. Email GTintrocourses@gmail.com to put your name down if you would like to be the first to hear when the dates are announced.

The HLP team have organised two more meet-ups, in Cheshire on 6 November and in Bristol on 6 December. Do come along and meet fellow GT and CGT members in your region. Then on 19 November our fourth Historic Landscape Assembly will be held at the Linnean Society in Burlington House, Piccadilly. The programme includes CGT case studies and speakers from Natural England, the Lottery Fund and Historic England. A highlight will be Fiona Davison, Head of Libraries and Exhibitions at the RHS, talking about her new book ‘The Hidden Horticulturists: The Untold Story of the Men who shaped Britain’s Gardens’. Find out more and book here.

County Garden Trust News and Events

New GT membership offer for CGT members

The Gardens Trust has launched a membership drive to encourage members of County Gardens Trusts to join the national Gardens Trust also, at a discounted rate of £25 for both single and joint memberships. Growing membership in this way will improve communications with local supporters, provide a bolder and more secure future for the Gardens Trust’s unique work conserving historic parks and gardens, and is the first step in a broader and ambitious membership drive. If you are not yet a member of your local CGT do consider joining to support their efforts (and, if you wish, benefit from this new rate next year). And please encourage your CGT friends and others who want to protect our historic gardens and landscapes to join us now.

Volunteers of the Year

GT President Gilly Drummond announced the winners of the Volunteer of the Year award as Juliet Christie of Cambridgeshire GT and Juliet Wilmot of Wiltshire GT. Both have contributed enormously to their trust over many years. Sadly, neither of them could be at the event to receive the award. Read more

Campaign

Our Lottery-funded project, Sharing Repton: Historic Landscapes for All, has several great days coming up this autumn to share what we have learned. We are particularly excited about ‘Sharing the Adventure: a case study day to help you reach more people’, which will run in Birmingham on 28 November and will present all the highs and lows of our pilot activities for engaging new people in historic parks and gardens and in our work.

There are also still a few spaces left on the social media workshop in London on 3 October, and details will follow on a day at the Brighton Pavilion on 5 December where you will have an opportunity to learn the most up-to-date approaches for producing leaflets and displays that can grab even the dullest imaginations! Details from sharinglandscapes@thegardenstrust.org

Conserve

Lancelot 'Capability' Brown is rightly famous for his landscapes, but his work on buildings is not as well known. This new catalogue from Historic England, written by Dr Sarah Rutherford and Ceryl Evans with Steffie Shields, aims to raise the profile of Brown's work as a buildings architect, with over 100 existing architectural drawings and other drawn material. Find out more about and download the reference catalogue here.

Research

This year's Mavis Batey Essay Prize was presented by Dominic Cole to Susan Oldham for essay about the C18th garden at Appledurcombe on the Isle of Wight. This year's New Research Symposium Panel  featured research on the gardens of four C16th women, the Marchioness de Grey's role at Wrest Park, Ruskin's garden at Brantwood, and visual representations of the Annesley Gardens in N Ireland.
