September 2019 Braking News

from the Rockland Bicycling Club

Here are Five Things to Know this month about riding in and around Rockland County.
  1. Are you registered for the 2nd annual RBC Ride 'Round Rockland Century? Experience the beauty of autumn in Rockland County riding scenic routes in the Hudson Valley! Sponsored by 9W Bikes and It's Coffee in Stony Point, all routes will start bright and early at 8a on Sun Sept 22 from Rockland Lake State Park (Parking Lot #1), so choose your route and your brew accordingly! Select from three fall-flavored routes: the Light Roast (37 miles, 2,311 ft elevation); the Half Caff (66 miles, 4,574 ft of climbing); or 103 miles at Full Perk (8,574 feet elevation).

RBC members can login and register at RocklandBicyclingClub.org. Not a member yet but want to ride? Visit Eventbrite.com to register. Can't ride but still want to help out? Volunteers are always welcome! More info for everyone at RocklandBicyclingClub.org.

  1. Complete Streets Workshop: On Sept 26, bike/walk advocates, transportation planners, public officials, and law enforcement will learn how to create complete streets that meet the needs of all users (adults, kids, seniors, special needs) and all transportation modalities (walking, cycling, driving, mass transit). Sponsored by NYSERDA and hosted by the Nyack river villages, this workshop is a great way for bike/walk advocates to learn what's needed to make safer streetscapes that encourage people to get around without having to drive everywhere. There are still a limited number of seats available for this 9:30a-3p workshop at the RCC Culinary Center in Nyack. Email Dave Zornow if you are interested in attending.
  1. Getting social, down by the riverside: The Hudson Water Club hosted the RBC August meetup and monthly meeting in Haverstraw. It was an evening of good vibes, nice weather and a spectacular sunset shared with friends who like to cycle. If you have an idea for an interesting place for future get togethers, email RocklandBike@gmail.org.

What's next? Mark your calendars for the Oct 16 and Nov 20 monthly meetings and the Dec 11 Holiday Party.

  2. Upcoming Regional Rides
  1. Community outreach at The Great Nyack Get Together -- Thanks to club members Leonora Merkel and Mark Garrahan for hosting the RBC booth at this community event for Rockland non-profits. There was lots of interest in the club and in the various types of bikes that Mark brought along. And kids of all ages had fun riding Leonora's vintage banana seat bike!

African Americans are part of that trend, with organizations like Black Girls do Bike and Major Taylor Cycling clubs opening chapters across the country for people to join group of cyclists who look like them. Physical activity helps to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It not only helps to maintain weight, reduces high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and several forms of cancer. Studies have shown a growing trend of African Americans getting informed and taking actions when it comes to their health. -- by Natasha Dailey.
