Fair Pay to Play: South Carolina lawmakers Kimpson & Bamberg say they will push forward on a bill in January that would allow student-athletes to monetize their NIL. The proposal "would also include a proposal to make schools put money into a trust fund for football and basketball player to collect after they graduate." Gamecocks AD Tanner comments, "I think we’re in a really good place. We do cost of attendance now and provide all kinds of services. I probably shouldn’t do my editorial, but I don’t see how it could ever work. We have 21 sports and for all intents and purposes, football pays the freight for the other 20. If we’re going in that direction, however it may be set up, it’s going to affect financially in a big way. […] Those institutions like ours that are self-supporting will no longer be self supporting. You’d have to get rid of a lot of sports. Would our donors continue to give to our programs or will they give to student-athletes? Where would the sponsorships go? Would they go to student athletes or would they stay within the athletics departments." (linklink); The Athletic/Washington Post contributor Jessop: "South Carolina proposing a bill similar to CA's Fair Pay to Play Act is critical, because if the NCAA sues both CA and SC, the possibility of a circuit split emerges, making it more likely the Supreme Court will address the issue of NCAA athlete publicity rights." (link); Not directed specifically to college athletics, but coincidental in timing, Department of Justice Asst. Attorney General Delrahim pens an opinion for USA Today. Thesis: "The Antitrust Division’s decisions to look into an industry are based on whether the underlying conduct has the potential to harm competition. It does not look into industries because of political objectives, nor can it refrain from examining possible anti-competitive conduct because it would be politically unpopular." More. (link)
Penn State's reserve fund balance was up to $12.3M at the end of FY19 as Nittany Lions AD Barbour points to "a combination of investment strategies, expense reduction initiatives and a steady climb in both overall traditional and new revenues." $5M will be directed to PSU's master facilities plan, along with $4M of future reserve cash. Back in 2013, the fund's balance was just $150K. (link); Notre Dame gets a $3M commitment for the endowment of the FB QB coach chair from the Mohr family, owners of the "largest wholly owned U.S.-based corporate real estate services firm." (link)
Auburn's Board of Trustees is good moving forward with a new Football Performance Center, though cost, timeline or scope have not yet been determined. The board also approved $9.2M worth of upgrades to Jordan Hare Stadium. Tigers AD Greene on the FB support space, "We’ve been talking about this project for quite a big period of time, and it’s nice to be able to engage the Auburn family and get the support of the board of trustees. I think they understand how important this project is to the future of our football program, and we’re happy to do it together." (link)
Facilities, continued: More pics from Wake Forest's new Sutton Sports Performance Center and Shah Basketball Complex. Ribbon cutting ceremony was yesterday. Scroll down. (link); UAB AD Ingram says the new Protective Stadium will be designed with seating expansion in mind, but initially the Blazers will have no intention to do so. (link); A slew of upgrades around Colgate's department, including new turf at Tyler Field, enhancements to the recruiting room, nutrition station & more. (link); Oklahoma State AD Holder is hopeful recently planted grass at the new O'Brate Stadium will hold & grow over the next couple of weeks & allow Baseball to begin their 2020 season in the new digs. (link)
The New York Times' Blinder writes on female ADs & the coincidental FB schedule this year for Pittsburgh as Panthers AD Lyke faced Virginia's Williams, Ohio's Cromer & Penn State's Barbour in the first three games of the season. Lyke: "That will probably never happen again in my career." Women Leaders boss Phillips on continuing to put more women in AD chairs, "We’re trying to make a cultural shift — that’s the big piece — and those things don’t happen overnight." Parker Executive Search's namesake VP, "If you’re going to have that mentality of ‘I can only hire an A.D. who comes from the Power Five,’ you’re going to have the never-ending cycle of not adding diversity to the mix." More. (link)
UC Riverside WBB HC Margaritis has resigned, effective immediately, after being placed on unpaid administrative leave earlier in the week. As of yesterday, Margaritis said he couldn't talk about the outcome, but would have a statement out in the near future. UCR AD Smith Jones says the search for a permanent replacement will be executed soon. (link)
Outsports profiles UC Irvine MBB HC Turner, who drew attention for calling Oregon's Louis King "queen" during last spring's NCAA Tournament. Turner has taken full responsibility for his words since, and has actively worked to educate himself on issues within the LGBTQ community, including attending Outsports Pride Summit at UCLA in June. Openly gay former NBA player Jason Collins - who Turner coached at Stanford - recalls when he heard Turner's press conference: "He was totally oblivious to what he had said, what was going on. I was upset about it. But also, I know Russ. I’ve known him for over 20 years. And I know the kind of person he is. And I knew instantly this was just him needing education.” (link)
The latest from former Ohio State/Florida/Utah FB HC Meyer on if he plans to return to the sidelines in the future to Cleveland.com's Lesmerises, "I'm not there at the moment. Like you said, next year can I say that? We'll talk again next year, and we'll see." (link); Former Oklahoma HC Stoops visited with Outkick the Coverage's Travis & also sounded like someone who isn't done leading programs. (link)

(link); Louisville AD Tyra goes with former Cards AC/current UTSA HC da Silva as the new Men's Tennis HC in the Derby City. (link); Disney boss Iger leaves the board of Apple, a position he has held since 2011. (link); FOX hires former Michigan FB great Woodson, supposed to debut on next week's Big Noon Kickoff when UM faces Wisconsin. (link)
Delaware AD Rawak, who took the job after a stint at Michigan, says of the Blue Hens FB program "Passion is passion. When I came in it was clear how they felt, the disappointment, how badly they wanted to be nationally relevant. That was clear from the players to the coaches to the community. The fact that we're bringing that back, you can feel it." Stadium renovations and the Whitney Athletic Center will be "transformational" and will ensure all student-athletes can "be the best version of themselves." A bit more. (link)
Wisconsin's annual economic impact to the state pegged at $610M. 4,480 supporting jobs, 1.8M visitors to Madison, $1.7M in hotel tax revenues for home FB games, $78M overall for travel to Camp Randall every season. Senior Assoc. AD Doherty: "We can say a football weekend at Wisconsin is a big economic driver or really has a big impact on the area or the city or the region or the state. But doing this project put numbers to it that you can point to and hang your hat on. ...I think it shows a pretty significant impact; I don’t think there’s any question about that." (link)
Per notable media executive Cole on the Disney-AT&T carriage negotiations, "10:45pm CT update: the negotiations are continuing into the night and the parties have agreed to an extension until 9 am EDT tomorrow. That puts the new expiration right on top of the start of the @CollegeGameDay originating from Ames, IA. No joke." (link)
Super interesting read on the future of The Athletic as inquiring minds continue to wonder if the quality media outlet will be able to last longterm given tens of millions in private equity funding. From 'A Media Operator' blog, "The question that needs to be asked is whether The Athletic can reach profitability before it needs to go back and raise more money. Once it raises more, the valuation is higher and that makes it even harder to actually be worth what you’re saying you’re worth. […] $60,000,000 in cost - $38,400,000 in revenue = $21,600,000 deficiency. That’s a lot of money. But if we think about their need to build a bundle, it’s fine to lose the money now if you’re going to be able to make it back and then some in the future. […] So, let’s do some math on the assumption that The Athletic reaches 1,000,000 subscribers at $64/subscriber, which is $64,000,000. 3x Revenue: $192 million. 7x Revenue: $448 million. […] When you’re losing money and chasing scale, your only option is to raise more money. If they raise at a higher valuation, that blows all of this math up." More. (link)

(link); The College Football Playoff has new Giphy stickers for use on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat. (link); San Jose State FB will play at Auburn in 2022 for a $1.85M guarantee. (link); Wisconsin and Hawaii have canceled the final two games of their three-game FB series, which were scheduled to be played in 2022 and 2024. No penalty per the contract. (link); Seven states in the SEC footprint make up the top-10 most NFL players per capita, with Alabama leading the way at 1 NFL player per 74,683 people. Other states are Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina and Texas. Florida leads with the most (212) players overall. (link)
