Continuing Education Grants awarded

The CPS Cabinet recently approved competitive grants to CPS faculty and staff. These grants are awarded several times a year to encourage them to consider ways to facilitate new partnerships and enhance CPS-CE course offerings to external and non-traditional audiences. Congratulations to the following who were awarded a Continuing Education Grant this year:

Maggie Beeber, John Gaffney and Pat Shaw: to research the viability of creating an elementary add-on certification
Celine McNelis-Kline and Corey Huck: to create a graduate-level certificate in health and wellness coaching
Sheila Miech: to create a Teaching Health Education Methods course for practicing teachers
Kevin Neuman: to create a Collective Bargaining course for our UWMC audience
John Leschke: to create a Principals of Production/Operations Management course for our UWMC audience
Scott Frazier: to create an Introduction to Teaching Physical Education course for students in two year colleges.

CPS Technology Mini-grants approved

Since 1999, UWSP has awarded $50,000 to the colleges in Technology Mini-grants to cover small computing-related purchases in support of faculty technology needs. This year, Kristi Roth received a grant to purchase Beep Baseball, one of few competitive sports completely accessible for individuals without vision. This assistive technology will provide a very beneficial experience for our students who will learn to use the technology and for the school-age children they work with. In addition, Corey Huck, Judie Pfiffner and Marsha Larson have been awarded a mini-technology grant to purchase pedometers as teaching/learning devices that will better prepare students use of technology in the field.

CPS iPad Pilot Project announced

College of Professional Studies faculty and staff are embracing the latest technology. So far this year, the following have been awarded iPad 2 devices to facilitate academic work, enhance student and community engagement, and reduce resource utlitization: Michael Butcher, Patty Caro, Cindy Cate, Eva Donohoo, Scott Frazier, Maysee Herr, Corey Huck, Aaron Kadoch, Sue Raab, Sara Reeve, Sallie Scovill and Nate Weiler.

New scholarship established in the School of Education

A planned gift of $92,000 in honor Mildred K. Schiller has been donated by Helen Preston to establish an endowment in the UWSP School of Education. The scholarship was created by Miss Preston to honor her aunt who was an elementary teacher and who was an inspiration to Miss Preston for her own career as an elementary education teacher. The late Miss Preston was a 1938 graduate of Stevens Point Normal and taught first grade in Neillsville, Wis.

School of Business and Economics receives gift

The UW-Stevens Point School of Business and Economics recently received an additional gift of $100,000 from John C. Seramur to help grow the John C. Seramur Economics and Business Scholarship, which has financially impacted hundreds of students since 1978. The Seramur Scholarship recognizes high scholastic achievement and potential of economics, business administration, and accounting majors at UWSP. John C. Seramur, retired president of the former First Financial Savings and Loan Association (now known as Associated Bank), established the scholarship along with the Seramur Family Foundation to recognize high scholastic achievement and potential of economics, business administration, and managerial accounting students at UWSP.

Graduate student reviews guidebook

Nutritional sciences

master’s student Laura Zelenak was one of the reviewers of a national resource published by the Society for Nutrition Education called "Helping Hands: A Guidebook for Volunteer Meal Providers." The guidebook was presented at the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo poster session in October.

IA 101 drawings on display in Agnes Jones Gallery

Student works from Interior Architecture 101 are currently on display in the Agnes Jones Gallery, on the first floor of the CPS Building. The drawings reflect the freshman learning outcomes of IA 101: Color and Design, a fundamentals course for all IA majors, where students learn the importance of the artistic elements such as lines, form and color and how they relate to space and objects. The three works by each student represent their study and techniques with these basic elements of design for various artistic and graphic effect.

Keep your eyes peeled for updated projects as the students develop more advanced techniques and applications later in the semester and culminating with a final project connecting all of their new skills with the design challenge of redesigning an important space on campus. Photo Gallery

Classified Staff Appreciation Week recap

Congratulations Kay Juhnke who was selected as the Classified Staff Exceptional Person of the Day on Friday, Oct. 14 to cap off Classified Staff Appreciation Week. Kay is the university services program associate in the Communicative Disorders Clinic.
