Jenna Randar is a State Park Interpreter with California State Parks, where she aims to ignite the spark of wonder and curiosity and helps people get to the heart of our parks.
Jenna has worked with the Department for over a decade--from the sandy beaches of Southern California to the desolate backbone of the Sierra Nevada--doing everything from giving interpretive tours to park visitors, caring for museum objects, and managing special events, to cleaning bathrooms and restocking toilet paper! While her skill set is broad, her passion revolves around the art of interpretation, creating opportunities for park visitors to form their own meaningful connections to a place. Jenna takes great joy in sharing our parks.

Holly Mitten is the current Chairperson of the Friends of North Bloomfield and Malakoff Diggins, the cooperating association supporting the educational, interpretive, and restoration of the resources of Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park. She is also involved in the efforts to consolidate her organization with the cooperating associations for the other two Western Nevada County Parks – Empire Mine SHP and South Yuba River SP.
An avid hiker, with a lifelong love of nature and dedication to its preservation, Holly has been involved in non-profit efforts locally and in the Bay Area for more than 40 years. She now makes her home in Nevada County, enjoying the companionship of her horse and dog companions at her property on Wolf Creek.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

I am keen on learning about what is new with the California State Parks. Growing up, my family and I spent time in parks all over the state of California. We had a few camping trips in which we slept in tents, and then my mom purchased a V.W. camper bus. That is when we went from North to South and visited many parks each summer. I truly enjoyed my stay at Jedediah Smith near Mendocino and Julia Pfeiffer near Monterey.
My husband and son have continued the tradition, camping in tents and then our trailer. Richardson Grove is a favorite with us. We have also enjoyed day visits to Columbia State Park, Hendy Woods, and Calaveras Big Trees. It is meaningful to get out in nature and spend time with love ones--no matter which of the amazing parks you choose.

We would like to recognize Sharon O'Hara for her generous contributions to our organization. She has always been enthusiastic, helpful, dedicated, and kind, not only with regard to our organization, but also with her many years of service to Citizens for Choice (as former president); AAUW; League of Woman Voters; and the Democratic Club.
She is moving to the Orange County soon, and she will be sorely missed by many of us. We want to wish her well in her new home, and hope she has time for plenty of R&R--she deserves it!

I joined BPWNC around 2008 because I knew Laurel Knapp from the National Women's Political Caucus conference in Los Angeles. When she heard that I was moving to Nevada County, she immediately extended an invitation to join BPWNC. I had been very active in the California Teachers' Association as a county and local leader, but did not know of BPW. My first meeting was at that small restaurant that used to be a bakery near the post office. (It has gone through many incarnations since!) I was very grateful when I saw the BPW sign in the window as I was so new in town I had no idea where I was going. As I got more involved in Citizens for Choice, it was logical to be part of BPWNC as on it was one of C4C's founding organizations, and I was continuing as a member of the AAUW and the League of Women Voters. I would like to share some of my fond memories with the group.
Those of you that have been part of BPWNC for quite a while will remember the essay contest event held at the GV Elk's Lodge and the baskets that were part of the prizes for the contest--held sometime near Easter. The plan was to buy Valentine candy when it went on sale after the holiday to include in the baskets. One year I got a little carried away and ended up making 10 or more baskets!
Another fun highlight--which Gail Parle and Sharon Rose were a large part of--was our fundraising efforts at Banner Grange's monthly flea market. Members donated all types of interesting items which we then sold for the scholarship fund. I venture to bet Gail remembers the time we sold a complete pink bathroom ensemble--anyone recall the days of colored toilet paper and Kleenex? We had an entire pink array for sale!
And speaking of Gail, I was honored to become the holiday auction elf--recognizing that no one was as great of an elf as Gail--and assist Susan Rogers in getting as many scholarship fund donations as possible.
I have never held an office in BPWNC, but over the years I have encouraged people to consider coming to a meeting and most often found that they would quickly want to join. We hang the scholarship information bulletins in The Clinic! (Citizens for Choice's clinic) and hope that clients take advantage of the amazing scholarship and encouragement awards offered twice a year.
So as I return to my former home in the city of Orange in the center of Orange County, I am sad to leave so many wonderful friends who do so much to enrich lives of women and families in our community. Thank you all! ■
