From the CEO's desk

Dear colleague,

It will be no surprise to you that our latest research report found that improved diversity in the composition of school staff leads to a range of benefits, including helping teams work smarter, increasing innovation, and improving performance.

The research shows, however, that we still have some way to go before the make up of our teachers and school leaders is representative of the Australian population.

The Spotlight report, which is featured in this newsletter, supports calls for school systems and sectors to take active steps towards increased quality and diversity within their leadership teams. I hope you’ll find it an interesting read.

Finally, as you settle into the school holidays, or reach the final days before yours begin, I would like to ask for your help to support and celebrate World Teachers’ Day.

Between now and World Teachers’ Day on Friday 25 October, we are encouraging the community to recognise the important work of our teachers and the #brightfuture of the profession.

Until next time,

Mark Grant
CEO

Diversity is key to improved performance

School leaders play a crucial role in the education of all Australian school children. Evidence demonstrates that strong school leadership, that emphasises quality teaching and learning, has a significant impact on student progress and achievement.

Diverse, quality school leadership teams improve school performance, increase innovation, and provide more creative approaches to problem solving.

What is a TPA and what does it mean for schools?

A Teaching Performance Assessment (or TPA) is a tool used to assess the practical skills and knowledge of pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers collect evidence of practice to complete a TPA in the final year of their initial teacher education (ITE) program. It is assessed by ITE providers and is a requirement for graduation.

Thinking of certification as a Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher?

In a number of states and territories, expressions of interest are now open for teachers seeking national certification as Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher. Using AITSL's Teacher Self-Assessment Tool can help you get an idea of your readiness for certification. Visit the website of your state/territory certifying authority to check key dates.
