What's on at Southern?
Grand Final here we come
It is just as exciting second time round. Our men's premier league team will play in the grand final on Saturday at 6pm at the State Netball and Hockey Centre against Footscray.

This years preliminary final did not have the drama of the shoot out of 2018, but drama there was. The boys kept their composure through a very stressful final quarter to keep their hard earned lead.  We could not be more proud.

Come and join the excitement of the crowd, wear your Southern clothes, or anything red, to cheer on the boys.

After the game a celebration of everything SUHC will be happening from 9pm back at Hotel Brighton. All are welcome but accompanying parents are required for any U18’s.

A bus will be heading from SNHC to Hotel Brighton at 8:30pm @ $5 per head. If you want to secure a seat please email Alisia our "Grand Final social secretary"  womens.section@suhc.com.au

The Heartbreak

The premier league women started out of the gates with pizzaz, determination and style, to take the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. It was not too last, the Footscray players fought back hard and despite many penalty corners we could not get another goal, going down 3-2.

Premiership for Pennant B &
     Promotion for Women's Pennant B & D

The win for our pennant B women should guarantee promotion for the team to pennant A. WIth the pennant D team finishing second on the ladder, and KBH both premier and minor premier, our pennant D women also have achieved all is required for promotion.
Thanks Tas
Southern United life member, and member of the women's firsts for the past 20+ years has played her last game in the women's firsts on the weekend. No, she is not hanging up her hockey stick, just the firsts.  Tas, you have been an incredible leader for our women's team over the years, thanks.
A time for reflection

End of 2016 Season, our women's section had finished their first season of premier league, and the men the third. The women had two wins and a draw - seven points, and the men had three wins and three draws - twelve points.  The women twelfth out of twelve, and the men tenth.

It is now end of 2019 THREE YEARS LATER.  Men take the premiership in 2018, and then to show all who doubted, the men finish as minor preimers in 2019 and will be running out on the pitch The men finished as minor premiers, with a premiership under their belt in 2018, and the women finish in the top 4 for the second year.  Now that is impressive.

The women's section moved to six teams in 2016, Premier League, Reserves, pennant B, a metro A and two metro B teams.   We finish 2019 and women in 2020 will have premier league & reserves, together with Pennant A, Pennant C, Pennant F and a metro team. How impressive is that.

The premier league game results for 2019 vs 2016 is just worth a look.
Finals
Women's Pennant B PREMIERS
From previous years and the start of this season, Hawthorn were going to be the team to beat.
Our first match up with them proved just that, going down 2-0 on a  lack luster day at the SNHC.

However, this turned out to be Southerns only loss for the season. As time went on players found their niche in the team
and week by week started to show that we were a force to be reckoned with.
A string of wins gave us momentum and further signs of what we were capable of on our day.

Along the way a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Uni had felt like a loss to the team and caused a little bit of disruption to our solidarity.
In hindsight this was not a bad thing as it showed that players were passionate and knew that we could do better.
We regrouped and got on with the job and went on to achieve some amazing scores. One being our 9-1win over Mentone who were pushing for finals.

Sitting on top of the ladder on goal difference and with Hawthorn nipping at our heals, we knew we couldn't go any lower than 2nd spot but if we
wanted a home semi final then we had to make sure of a convincing win over Melbourne Uni at their home ground.

Each of our 4 goals was answered quickly by the opposition and resulted in another draw which cost us finishing in top spot.
To the teams credit, this time was going to be different. After the initial frustration of what should have been a win, they remained composed and focused
and most of all united and came out the following week with a convincing win.
We decided that playing the first final V Hawthorn at their ground wasn't going to matter and it didn't. A convincing 3-0 win put us into the GF.

Then to our surprise Hawthorn experienced their 2nd only loss for the season in the preliminary final going down to Essendon 1-0.

With this is mind we were fully aware that anything can happen in finals and to be victorious we were going to have to give this GF everything that we had,
not leaving anything to chance.

I couldn't be more proud of this team particularly in the finals campaign. Our defense was rock solid and our attack always looked

dangerous, penetrating through the midfield and then with every circle entry.  In the Grand Final, 2-0 up at half time, the girls knew that this was far from
won and not one player under estimated Essendon's ability to fight back and Southern worked tirelessly to the final whistle with a 4-1 win!
To my team, I thank you:-
My Back line: Sal, Bron, Emily. Halves: Sarah, Mandi, Jo, Sammi. Inside forwards: Greta, Becky, Lou. Strikers: Lea, Alisia, Puck, Nicole, Hannah and Amy.
To the fill in players that helped us out: Kath, Ange, Lucy, Kate M, Kate S, Corinne, Mel, Kirsty ( I apologise if I have forgotten anyone).
To my Leaders, Captain Bron and Vice Captain Mandi.

To my Mangers: Thank you so much to Petra and to Zander, who filled the role when Petra couldn't be there.
To Traz and Hayden for organising the bench and interchange in the finals and finally to Lex and Warren for your support and assistance at training.

Women's Pennant D - RUNNERS UP
Women's Pennant D played off in the Grand final against minor premiers Kew and started off really well in the first few minutes. Unfortunately we couldn't make the most of the couple of chances we had on goal & the remainder of the half became a battle of the defences. Our back 4 of Lucy, Jen, Ness & Maia were holding strong and keeping out a fast & determined KBH forward line.  Our Mids of Kate, Liv, Maddy were taking the ball well out of defence & getting tit to our forwards but the KBH defence were as strong going back the other way. Too many Southern passes were missing the mark, making it hard to get our link play going but we kept pushing & went into half time nil all with KBH just having the edge. The 2nd half started at a hectic pace for both teams with KBH piling on the pressure early. Again we withstood their attacks & created some good opportunities with Hayley & Jett on some solid runs & the never give up twins Ange & Karina pushing hard up forward. We had our chances but couldn't quite capitalise before KBH scored off a P.C. Late in the half we had a great chance to score with several close scramble shots on goal somehow being kept out by the KBH goalie and so it turned out that was our last chance to equalise, giving KBH a deserved 1 nil win.
A disappointing game result on the day but runner up is a great result having come up from Pennant F the year before &  the commitment from our players never wavered & despite being run off their feet they were always in the game & never stopped trying until the final whistle. Such a great group of players who I've had the pleasure of working with all year and a just reward for them is they get promoted to Pennant C next season.

Women's Masters 35A - RUNNERS UP

A disappointing end of the season for the Women's Masters A. We were on the back foot from the get go and only had glimpses of the brilliance we've been used to. Special mention to Bron for another ripper night in goals and our dedicated supporters for making it all the way to the SHC. This year we had 24 different women play for us across the five top women's teams. The calibre of women at our club is phenomenal and it's fantastic to see so many'old ducks' still playing.
