Workshop update
With end of year AMEB and VCE exams approaching, now is a great time to think about bringing your instrument in for a service or tune-up. Our workshop is equipped to handle all sorts of jobs, from minor adjustments to major restorations and panel beating. Workshop manager Aaron spends a lot of time honing his skills in the tricky art of brass dent removal, which he explains below:

"Dent removal is one of the dying arts in our trade. There have been a few developments in the technology of removing dents but sadly these have mainly focused on completing dent repairs faster, but not necessarily better. We find the best dent removal is done using old-school techniques utilising a tailored selection of custom mandrels and burnishing tools.

Often one of the trickiest repairs are saxophone bell flare dents. The shape and curve of the bell is difficult to reform perfectly and it’s an area that, if approached incorrectly, can be an even harder task to set straight. The use of sickle-shaped bell irons (moulds) simplifies the task, and are a necessary tool if you want to burnish the metal to be smooth and back to its original shape. We have them for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, as well as another ten for brass instrument bells. Hand tools that we have made also play an important role, as well as the experience of thirty years in the trade.

Another important tool in our Moorabbin workshop is our dent machine. Equipped with a full range of accessories, it isn’t always a go-to for every repair, but when dealing with very damaged instruments this tool is indispensable.

In the last couple of months, we have been manufacturing mandrels and custom dent removal tools on heavy machinery that the workshop has recently invested in. The nature of repair work is variable, and often necessitates the use of custom tooling. By owning and running our own machines, we are able to economically manufacture a tool for your project and add it to our collection of forms and mandrels for future use. So no matter what job walks through the door, Ozwinds Workshop will have you covered.
