DO YOU WANT TO DIRECT MORE TEACHER PREPS?

<<First Name>>
CPS is claiming that principals want two additional days of principal-directed teacher preps each week on top of the one principal-directed prep we currently have.

I’ve met one-on-one with more than 100 principals and AP’s about a range of concerns. When it came to professional development they were clear that they wanted more time to meet with their entire staff by doing one or both of the following:

  • Returning teacher report time to 30 minutes before classes begin and giving principals one of those 30-minute time blocks each week for staff meetings or PD.
  • Reinstituting additional professional development days and half-days.

The above options allow principals to do in one 30- or 60-minute session, what would take an entire day if done through more principal-directed preps because prep periods only allow them to meet with a few staff members at a time. In addition, most principals respect the fact that teachers need a majority of their preps to plan lessons, grade assignments, and other related tasks.

However, before CPAA takes a public position on this issue, we want to ensure our read of our members is accurate. You will receive a quick two-question anonymous email survey on Wednesday afternoon with the following questions:

  1. The district should increase principal-directed teacher preps from one per-week to three per-week (Select One: Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, Strongly Disagree).
  2. The district should create more time and opportunities for whole-staff professional development (Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, Strongly Disagree).

Check your email on Wednesday at noon for this important anonymous survey on teacher professional development time.

Sincerely,
