Bounty Box Briefing
Week 17 - Pick-up on September 18

Don't Miss These Great Local Events - By Andrea Evelsizer

You have probably noticed that in each issue I try to highlight some of the local events going on in North Iowa. Some have been hosted by our great local communities (such as farmers markets and local food dinners) and I've often shared information about events hosted by one of our partner organizations, Healthy Harvest of North Iowa. Healthy Harvest has two great events coming up soon that you don't want to miss.

This coming Sunday, September 22 there is a literal farm-to-fork field trip in Wright County. The full tour will begin at Purple Ribbon Beef  (technically starting at their General Store in Clarion) and follow their process from their farm to the meat processor (LeWright’s Meat Locker), and finish with a burger dinner served by Grounded in Clarion. You're welcome to join for the first, FREE, part of the tour from the Purple Ribbon General Store in Clarion and to their farm. Or if you have the time I encourage you to try the Full Tour starting at the store and ending at the restaurant. The fee is just $39.00 and includes transportation, a beverage and snacks at Timbukbre (brewery) and a meal at Grounded. The full tour runs 2:30 pm - 6:30 pm. Pre-registration is required at  https://www.healthyharvestni.com/followthebeef and spaces are limited!

Also... on Thursday September 26th, you can enjoy local popcorn and recipe samples at the Historic Park Inn Ballroom (15 W State St, Mason City) while enjoying a showing of 'The Biggest Little Farm' which is a great story that follows a couple through their successes and failures as they work to develop a sustainable farm on 200 acres outside of Los Angeles. I was fortunate to view the film yesterday, on the plane, and found it to be inspiring and educational, as well as, heartwarming and frustrating. A MUST SEE for all local food lovers/supporters and really everyone who is open to learning more about sustainable farming. This event is FREE but you're encouraged to register, for planning purposes, HERE. Also guests are encouraged to grab dinner and/or drink at one of the businesses in downtown Mason City who are doing a special feature that evening highlighting local ingredients: 1910 Grille and 1910 LoungeFat Hill BrewingLorados Mason City, and The Quarry & Tapas Bar.

I hope you will consider checking out one, or both, of these events and keep an eye on other Healthy Harvest events on their website
Don't Forget to Order your Fall and Winter Boxes

Fall Share will include some fall greens (lettuce and/or spinach) and possibly some other late fall item depending on the occurrence of frost and availability. Both the Fall and Winter Shares will contain a good supply of storage items such a various colors of potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots and various squash. We try to provide a good diversity products but a lot depends on weather, and harvest, at this time of year so we are still not exactly sure what will be available.

Meet Our Producers - Stories From the Field
DMS Inc. - Jeff Short (Garner)
Fall is great time on the farm here in Garner, the weather is cooling off and a lot of produce is getting ready to be harvested. I, Jeff Short, will be listing apples, raspberries, green peppers and cherry tomatoes in the next few weeks in your product box.

Growing apples for me started over 40 years ago while growing up on my parent’s farm north of Garner. During that period of time my parents started an apple orchard, “Short’s Pick Acres”. I was involved in planting, pruning and harvesting apples for many years of my childhood. I feel that this is where I developed my passion for growing fruits and vegetables.

The fall raspberry season has just begun and will continue until the first hard freeze, check out the a-la-carte options. I am also growing 13 varieties of grapes in my vineyard. These grapes make great jam and jellies, so if any one is interested in grapes or grape juice, please let us know. All of the produce grown on my farm is raised without the use of chemicals. I am a firm believer that we use way too many chemicals while trying to produce the best most perfect fruit or vegetable. I think that when the end user decides to accepts fruit or vegetable that is not perfect, we will have more growers using less or no chemicals, which will make all produce better for all of us.
