Volunteer of the Year Award!
Miranda Leers
Miranda Leers, while pursuing a B.S. degree in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution at UC San Diego interned with San Diego Habitat Conservancy in 2018 through the beginnig of 2019. Her senior project included a wildlife monitoring project on SDHC lands. She set up trail cameras in our preserves and gathering footage of animal frequency and movement patterns. She presented her findings at the 2019 UC San Diego Environmental Symposium and Alumni Reunion. She also accompanied SDHC staff on local monitoring visits where she helped control invasive species and picked up trash. This internship aligned with Miranda's career goals and benefited SDHC immensely Thank You Miranda!
TULE PRESERVE RARE PLANT SURVEYS
We first highlighted the addition of the Tule Preserve in our 2018 newsletter, a 600 acre preserve of contiguous desert habitat located north of Boulevard with an abundance of rare plants. This year we completed the first monitoring efforts for Payson’s jewelflower, Jacumba milkvetch, sticky geraea, desert beauty, Mountain Springs bush lupine, Tecate tarplant, Jacumba monkeyflower, Palmer’s monkeyflower, Oceanblue larkspur, and southern jewelflower. This year's surveys will be compared to previous studies to understand the population dynamics and monitor fluxuation to determine when seeding events are justified. We have chosen a few picturesque photos to share with you.

Welcome Kathleen Pollett
Kathleen joined San Diego Habitat Conservancy in January of this year. Kathleen is passionate about land management and conservation and is delighted to be working with lands that are conserved in perpetuity. She has a Masters of Science Degree in Biology/Ecology and a Bachelors of Science in Zoology with Chemistry and Botany Minors. She has been working in the biological field for more than 20 years including 10 years for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Southern and Central California were she implemented Habitat Conservation Plans and designed voluntary private land habitat enhancement projects with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The position of Senior Conservation Habitat Manager is a dream come true for her and she is immersing herself in the management plans of the San Diego Habitat Conservancy Preserves and looks forward to being part of the stewardship of these diverse lands.
Welcome Vince Rivas
San Diego Habitat Conservancy rewelcomes Vince Rivas as our new Conservation Habitat Manager. Vince previously was the SDHC Volunteer of the Year in 2015, and has always sought a hands on role in environmental conservation, Vince looks forward to immersing himself in San Diego's unique and valuable habitats, while taking direct action to improve the resources and ecosystems pertinent to the region. Vince's past experiences include working as a Project Manager for HELIX Environmental Planning, where he focused on implementing restoration and maintenance projects. As a Conservation Habitat Manager, Vince will be executing general field activities such as surveys and monitoring visits, coordinating and implementing weed control efforts, and tracking projects and proposals. Vince hopes to gain critical insight and experience into how to best manage San Diego's biological resources particularly in regards to native and non-native plant species. Outside of conservation, Vince enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle. In 2017 he cycled from San Francisco to San Diego in a week and has ran four marathons in the past two years. We look forward to seeing how Vince's past experiences and passion for habitat preservation will further contribute to our mission of managing and protecting the organisms and ecosystems that define San Diego.
