Drop-in Astronomy: See the Stars

Oh Deer, Elk and Moose!
Saturday Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-noon
Near Nederland. Location provided to registered participants.

Join volunteer naturalists for a moderate two-mile hike to learn about the natural history, behavior, and ecology of the three members of the deer family that call Boulder County home. We’ll also look for signs of wildlife along the trail.
Registration is required.

Family Evening at the Museum CariBOO: Mythical Creatures and Stories
Friday Oct. 11, 7-8:30 p.m.
Nederland Mining Museum, 200 N. Bridge Street, Nederland

Have fun at an evening of haunted tales and mythical creatures hosted with Rocky Mountain Storyteller Wynn Montgomery and Nederland Library Director, Elektra Greer. This family-friendly event promises thrills and chills for every age. Please register so we have enough ghoulish treats! Come in costume for added fun! For ages 4-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Please register one adult for every 2-4 children.

Junior & Senior Fishing Derby
Saturday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m.-noon
Wally Toevs Pond at Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat off of 75th Street between Jay Road and Valmont Road, Boulder

Participants need one senior 65 or older and one junior 15 or younger, to fish together as a team. Prizes are awarded for the team that catches the heaviest trout, has the largest age difference, and are first to catch the limit.
-The pond is stocked with rainbow trout—artificial and live bait are permitted.
-Seniors must have a valid Colorado fishing license.

Story in the Rocks Hike
Saturday Oct. 12, 10 a.m.-noon
Near Lyons. Location provided to registered participants.

Join volunteer naturalists for a 1.3-mile moderate hike to learn how this scenic landscape has changed over time. The stories in the rocks span over 200 million years, from ancient sand dunes to tidal flats to riverbeds where dinosaurs roamed. The rocks also determine the landforms and ecology of the present landscape, including the plants and wildlife we find here.

Goats Galore – Meet and Greet

Join the Goats Galore 4-H club and their goats for a drop-in program all about goats.
Why do people raise goats? Do goats really eat tin cans and tennis shoes? Learn about raising goats, breeds, and their housing and feed requirements.

Join volunteer naturalists to learn about birding through the seasons. This program will explore where to find and how to identify some of our local and migratory birds, and also introduce you to an amazing range of ecosystems and habitats.

High Peaks and Silver Dreams

Join volunteer naturalists for a hike through geologic and historical time on this moderate 4-mile (round-trip) hike.

Visit the Assay Museum
Saturday October 19, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The James F. Bailey Assay Office Museum, located in the historic town of Wallstreet just west of Boulder, helps tell the story of hard rock mining in this area. The assay office was the place where prospectors would take their ore samples to find out whether they had potentially “struck it rich.” The determination of the assayer could, and often did, make or break a prospector. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome.

Digging the Sugar Beet

Come learn about Boulder County’s sweetest crop. Participants will have the opportunity to pick, process, and taste their own sugar beet. While the beets simmer, we’ll do a short presentation on the history of the sugar beet in Boulder County. For ages 8 and older and accompanying adult. Space is limited.

North Foothills Geology & Landforms
Saturday October 26, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Near Lyons. Location provided to registered participants.

Join geologist and volunteer naturalist Roger Myers and others to learn about the dramatic geology and landscape of the northern foothills. This moderately strenuous 2-mile hike (roundtrip) will cover rocks that span over 1.7 billion years of geologic history. This hike is geared to adults. Near Lyons. Location provided to registered participants.
