Dear IMIrJ leaders and friends,

Hope this email finds you well and enjoying the transition to fall. As we hit the ground running this season, we give thanks for your friendship, leadership, and companionship in the struggle for justice. Your presence makes our movement community more complete!

With that in mind, we wanted to invite you to a special gathering on Wednesday, October 16th.

While Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon's Collins Summit has been happening annually for a long time, this year IMIrJ is especially excited to partner and participate. We wanted to drop you a personal invitation to join us for two reasons...

First, alongside movement leaders and friends in housing and environmental justice, the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (IMIrJ) is going to be guiding (what we think) will be a powerful afternoon session. It's not often we have a chance to pause as a movement community and do some powerful meaning making, theologizing, and collective reflection on our action. On the 16th, we hope to do just that-- your participation will help the time be richer!

And second, from IMIrJ Organizer, Rev. Ron Werner, Jr., "my good friend Carlos Mendoza-Alvarez is going to be the keynote speaker in the evening. Carlos is a liberation theologian and professor in Mexico City walking alongside and working with families whose loved ones have been disappeared as a result of increasing global violence. His work has had a tremendous impact on me and I've been fortunate to build a friendship with him over the past few years. Most of his published work is in Spanish, so it's unlikely to find him at Powell's Books or on a stateside bestseller list, but I hope you will find his reflections as meaningful as I do!"

You can find all of the official information and registration link below for the Collins Summit below!

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Alaide, Sarah, and Ron

In a world of increasing fear and violence, how can we build networks of resistance rooted in our spiritual traditions? A third wave of liberation theology turns to the lived experience of people already facing global violence as a testimony of life in the face of death. These communities draw on emerging and ancient spiritualities that grow out of their contexts. They also share wisdom for our own spirituality.

The 2019 Collins Summit: Listening at the Margins will be an opportunity to hear about and practice methods of listening that build strength for social justice work in our local communities.

The speaker for the evening Collins Lecture will be
Dr. Carlos Mendoza-Alvarez, a Dominican priest and internationally known liberation theologian. His theological investigation illuminates the ancestral wisdom, yearning for justice, and hope that emerges from the resistance and resilience of the victims and survivors of global violence. Mendoza-Alvarez’s most recent work has examined what resurrection can mean in a context of thousands of disappeared and murdered in Mexico.
