Thanks to the generous donations by Marlow Campbell, Nationwide Agency President, and Drs. Bovenizer and Baker , our school has new water bottle refilling stations! These local community supporters have helped us reduce our one-time plastic bottle use, thereby helping our environment. We can't thank them enough!

Both of these businesses actively support our local community on a continuous basis. Keep up with their efforts by following their Facebook pages:
https://www.facebook.com/marlowcampbellinsurance/

AFHS has several more water fountains that need to be converted into additional bottle refilling stations. If you or your company would be interested in Sponsoring one of these conversions, email Amy Camp at president@afhsptsa.org. A minimum donation of $500 is required and, as a non-profit 503(c), your investment would be tax-deductible!

Established by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, the Congressional App Challenge encourages middle and high school students from across the country to develop an innovative app for a mobile device or computer. The competition is designed to expose students to the world of app development without necessarily requiring prior coding experience. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from and network with leading STEM educators and employers from North Carolina’s 4th District, who will act as mentors and judges in the competition.

2019 Key Dates and Events:

  • Saturday, September 21st – App Challenge Jumpstarter! |RSVP link: https://appjumpstarter.eventbrite.com |9:00 AM – 3:00 PM| Fidelity Investments, RTP
  • Friday, November 1st – App Challenge Submission Deadline |congressionalappchallenge.us
  • Thursday, November 21st – Pitch Competition & Awards Ceremony |6:00 PM – 8:00 PM| Friday Institute, NC State University

About the events, and how to participate:

To enter the competition, participants should submit a 1-3 minute video and questionnaire by Friday, November 1st, 2019. Students may submit as individuals or in teams of up to four. The winners of the competition will have their app featured on the U.S. House of Representatives website and displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Students must register for the challenge at: congressionalappchallenge.us.

To assist students in their app idea development, Congressman Price will be hosting an App Challenge Jumpstarter on Saturday, September 21 at Fidelity Investments in the Research Triangle Park. The event is free, and lunch will be provided. Students are asked to bring a laptop, but extras will be available for sign-out. Students must RSVP for the event at https://AppJumpstarter.eventbrite.com.

The competition winners will be selected by a panel of professional judges at a pitch competition to be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at North Carolina State University’s Friday Institute.  Although only a select group of finalists will be invited to participate in the pitch competition, all House App Challenge entrants—as well as their families, teachers, school administrators, and local education officials—will be invited to attend the competition and subsequent award ceremony.

Ask the tough question
When somebody you know is in emotional pain, ask them directly: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

#BeThe1To
Keep Them Safe
Is your friend thinking about suicide? Ask if they’ve thought about how they would do it and separate them from anything they could use to hurt themselves.

Be There
If your friend is thinking about suicide,
Listen to their reasons for feeling hopeless and in pain.
Listen with compassion and empathy and without dismissing or judging.

#BeThe1To
Help Them Connect
Help your friend connect to a support system, whether it’s 800-273- TALK(8255), family, friends, clergy, coaches, co-workers or therapists, so they have a network to reach out to for help.
