A lecture, a new report, news, and book reviews

On the 23rd October Stewart Lansley will be speaking at the University of Birmingham on the topic 'Basic Income for All: the key to a progressive future or a dead end?' 

Stewart is the co-author (with Howard Reed) of the 2019 Compass report: Basic income for all:  from desirability to feasibility and co-editor (with Amy Downes) of It’s Basic Income: The Global Debate, Policy Press, 2018. His other recent books include A Sharing Economy, Policy Press, 2016, and Breadline Britain, The Rise of Mass Poverty, Oneworld, 2015 (with Joanna Mack ). 

The event is free to attend, but registration is required.

Book reviews

The Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath has published a new report,  Basic Income, Automation, and Labour Market Change, by Luke Martinelli

The research questions tackled by the research project are these:

  1. Is basic income a feasible solution to forthcoming dynamics of labour market change?
  2. How do automation and associated labour market risks affect public opinions towards basic income, and the potential for constituencies of support to coalesce around the idea?
  3. Is basic income affordable, and how do its distributional implications compare with pre-existing
